NFL Pre-season Point Spread and Betting Analysis

New Orleans and Green Bay don’t play in the 2022 regular season, although this writer expects both to make the NFC playoffs so they could there. They met in the 2021 regular-season opener in Jacksonville, Fla., in a Saints home game displaced by Hurricane Idea. The Packers played easily their worst game of the year in getting destroyed 38-3. Aaron Rodgers had just 133 yards passing and two picks and was pulled early in the fourth quarter, while Jameis Winston threw five TD passes for New Orleans, which also rushed for 171 yards.

These teams are participating in joint practices early this week in Wisconsin. The Saints last played in Green Bay in the preseason in 2015. This will be the 10th preseason meeting between the clubs, with Green Bay winning seven of the previous nine.

New Orleans Saints

Dennis Allen made his Saints head coaching debut in Week 1 of the preseason and New Orleans lost 17-13 in Houston; Allen was formerly the team’s defensive coordinator and promoted when Sean Payton stepped away from coaching. No. 1 Saints quarterback Jameis Winston didn’t play vs. the Texans because of a foot injury but should Friday barring a setback. Andy Dalton threw a touchdown pass on his only possession in his debut with New Orleans. Second-year QB Ian Book saw most of the action and that likely will continue. Book’s two turnovers led to 10 points for the Texans. The Saints’ defence looked excellent despite most starters sitting as that unit forced three turnovers, forced six punts and allowed just three third-down conversions on 12 attempts.

Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers hasn’t played in a preseason game since 2018 and barring Coach Matt LaFleur changing his mind will not here, either, although LaFleur didn’t rule out Rodgers for the exhibition finale. Interesting decision only as the Packers are breaking in a few new receivers and offensive linemen. Former first-round pick Jordan Love started Week 1 at San Francisco in a 28-21 loss and should again. He threw for 176 yards and two TDs but also had three picks in one half of action. Love found rookie Romeo Doubs on a 33-yard TD on Green Bay’s second drive; Doubs, a fourth-round pick out of Nevada, has been a star in camp.

Another rookie receiver, second-rounder Christian Watson, was recently activated from the PUP list but not expected to play in the preseason. “We had basically two drops, and then on the other one, we had two receivers run the wrong routes,” LaFleur said of Love’s performance. “So I thought there was a lot of good. He moved the ball; he pushed the ball down the field.” Green Bay is down two kickers with starter Mason Crosby still dealing with knee issues and rookie Gabe Brkic injuring his hamstring in pre-game warmups vs. the Niners and since placed on injured reserve. He’ll miss the season.
