The Chargers have always been injury cursed. There’s something about the Southern California sun that has always worked against them. This past week they lost newcomer safety Jaylen Watkins to a torn ACL. He now joins tight end Hunter Henry, corner Jason Verrett, and undrafted rookie Austin Roberts in the team’s ripped ACL ward. Long story short, watch for a major job battle at the safety spot on Saturday night.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The LA Chargers enter this game as 2.5-point favourites on the NFL odds board. They come in with a 1-1 overall record but are 2-8 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 Saturday performances. They’ll need a nice outing from their secondary in this one who were at one point ranked as one of the best defences in the game – until they started dropping like flies to injury.

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints will continue to audition their big backs to replace Mark Ingram for the first four weeks of this season. While doing so, they’ll take their 14-5 ATS road record through their last 19 to the oft-half empty Stub Hub Center.

New Orleans Saints

As mentioned, the Saints are looking for a big body to compliment Alvin Kamara on the ground. Their steady tandem of Mark Ingram and AK will have to wait till Week 5 with Ingram out for using a banned substance. The front-runner to complete the tandem right now is Jonathan Williams over veterans Shane Vereen and Terrance West.

Although the Saints are 1-1 this preseason, they’ve allowed just one touchdown on the ground and two through the air through two games. They’ve faced the Jags and Cards thus far too, so three touchdowns through two games bodes well for a defence still trying to forget the Minneapolis Miracle.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are simply trying to survive the pre-season. The record doesn’t matter and the stats are irrelevant when it comes to overall health. The Internet broke one week ago when Mike Williams skied over a Seahawks defender to make a highlight touchdown grab. Coming off his 2017 injuries though, it’s likely that head coach Anthony Lynn has politely asked Mike to stay on the ground this Saturday.

The big story aside from that for LA is their kicking. Their Achilles heel last year was the three-pointers so this offseason they picked up Roberto Aguayo and Caleb Sturgis to try to Band-Aid the wound.
