The beleaguered Buccaneers defence could use a break – and this week’s matchup might offer just that as the Bucs host a Washington team that has been decimated by injuries to the offensive line.

Guards Brandon Scherff and Shawn Lauvao will miss the rest of the season, while tackle Trent Williams is out another 2-3 weeks after undergoing thumb surgery. Tampa enters the week ranked 30th in the NFL in passing defence.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

These teams are dead even on a neutral field according to oddsmakers, with the Bucs’ getting the three-point bump due to home-field advantage. Tampa has been a poor cover option for most of the season, and has gone just 1-5 ATS in its previous six games. Washington comes in as a red-hot cover play, having gone 5-2 ATS in its last seven games against NFC foes while covering four straight after failing to cover in its previous contest.

The total for this one sits at 51.5, but the prevailing trends offer little help. Washington has been a terrific under choice, having slipped below the number in nine of its previous 12 games. It’s also 4-1 to the under in its past five road contests. Tampa Bay, on the other hand, is a red-hot 8-1 O/U in its past nine games and has converted the over in each of its previous six encounters with NFC opponents.

Washington Redskins

It will be interesting to see how Washington quarterback Alex Smith adjusts to having the majority of his starting offensive line on the sidelines. While Smith remains one of the least mistake-prone QBs in the league – he has thrown just three interceptions – the team is also one of only five teams with single-digit touchdown passes on the year (nine). Smith has also been sacked just 16 times in nine games, but three of those came vs. the Falcons.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers’ passing situation is the exact opposite of Washington’s, with the tandem of Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick having combined for 23 TD passes – second-most in the league – and an NFL-worst 17 interceptions. And the Bucs, who are coming off a 42-28 defeat at the hands of Carolina – haven’t bounced back well from poor defensive showings, having gone 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight after allowing 30 or more points last time out.
