The winner of the NFC West is going to be much clearer after the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks go head-to-head at Lumen Field Sunday. The Seahawks own a better record at 10-4, but with a road win in Week 16 the 9-5 Rams would make that ground up plus sweep their season series.

Despite quarterbacks Jared Goff and Russell Wilson being the big names in this giant divisional showdown it’s been the run games of both clubs that are clicking. Wilson passed for just 121 yards last week while Goff… lost to the New York Jets.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Seahawks are the favourite Sunday, but oddsmakers aren’t letting recency bias dictate much as Seattle is getting just 1.5 points to cover. Head coach Sean McVay’s 5-2 record against Pete Carroll’s Seahawks is a factor, same with Los Angeles’ 23-16 win over Seattle in Week 10.

The total for that match was 55.5 but this time around it’s been lowered to 47.5. You can point to Seattle’s defensive play as to why. Since that Week 10 loss in L.A., the Seahawks are 4-1 and giving up 14.6 points per game. What’s even wilder is the Seahawks still rank dead last in opponents passing yards per game with 293 — Goff had 302 in their first game.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams have been in the spotlight all week after giving the Jets their first dub of the season. It was L.A.’s offence that never got going with Goff having just 209 yards passing. Rookie running back Cam Akers missing some action didn’t help either, and he’s already been ruled out for Week 16 with an ankle injury.

Darrell Henderson Jr. and Malcom Brown will split carries instead, as both have over 90 on the year. They’ll be up against a Seattle defence giving up 3.9 yards per carry, tied for fifth in the NFL. That’s 0.1 yard more than what the Rams are allowing as they rank second in the league.

Seattle Seahawks

Over their last three games, here’s where Seattle ranks defensively: first in points per game, second in yards per pass attempt, and tied for ninth in takeaways per game. They did face three of the NFL’s bottom-ranked offences, but Seattle still dropped one of those. Wins in the NFL don’t come easy – ask the Jets.

The Seahawks’ defensive improvements have come at a key time too as their offence is only posting 191 passing yards per game over the same time span. Carroll’s turned to the ground game instead, one that’s averaging 155 yards a game since Week 13 between the duo of Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde.

And if need be, you can still trust Wilson with the ball in his hands.
