NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Six of the NFC’s seven playoff spots have been clinched, and the lone remaining is the final wild-card spot between 8-8 teams Seattle, Detroit and Green Bay. While the Seahawks would get it as things stand, they don’t control their own destiny. They would earn it with a victory over the Rams and a Green Bay home loss to Detroit in the Sunday night game. This writer doesn’t happen to think the Packers do lose that game, but stranger things have happened.
The Rams are set to have the worst season ever for a defending Super Bowl champion but should return to contention next season if they can stay healthy – although all those trades involving first-round picks are going to come back and haunt this team big time. Maybe it already has. LA doesn’t have its first-rounder this year as it goes to Detroit.
Seattle won in Los Angeles 27-23 in Week 13. Geno Smith hit DK Metcalf on the winning TD pass with about 30 seconds left. Smith had three TD passes overall. John Wolford was the Rams QB that day and threw two picks. He won’t see the field here.

Los Angeles Rams
Los Angeles had played a lot better for the most part since claiming QB Baker Mayfield off waivers ahead of Week 14, but the Rams players looked like they quit this past Sunday in a 31-10 loss at the rival Chargers. Mayfield was held to 132 yards passing, although Cam Akers continued his late-season surge with 123 yards rushing. I’d still expect Mayfield back in 2023 as a backup to Matthew Stafford. Three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald hasn’t played in a few weeks and won’t here. Against the Chargers without Donald, the Rams didn’t have a sack and had only two QB hits on Herbert. LA only has 35 sacks on the year. The Rams are 1-4-1 ATS in their past six on the road.
Seattle Seahawks
That Seattle is even in playoff contention at 8-8 is a pretty big surprise as the Seahawks were expected to be one of the NFC’s worst teams after trading Russell Wilson to Denver. But former backup Geno Smith has had his best season and may win NFL Comeback Player of the Year – and earn another contract next season with the team. Seattle kept its playoff hopes alive by ending a three-game skid on Sunday with a 23-6 win over the visiting Jets, ending New York’s postseason hopes. Smith, a former Jet, threw for two scores. The Seahawks definitely have their running back of the future in rookie Kenneth Walker III, who had 133 yards on 23 carries. He has been great when able to stay healthy. Could this be Pete Carroll’s final game as coach? He will be 72 early in the 2023 campaign. The Seahawks are 1-6 ATS in their past seven overall but have all the motivation.
