The Los Angeles Rams stole all the headlines in free agency but it’s their Week 1 opponents who are generating all the chatter entering the new season – albeit not for positive reasons. Jon Gruden tries to prove Khalil Mack isn’t worth the fuss when his Raiders host the defending NFC West division champs in the late MNF matchup.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Raiders opened as 2.5-point home underdogs but the line has grown to +5 in recent days. Only the Cleveland Browns are getting more points (5.5) at home in Week 1 of the new season.

Oakland is just two years removed from its 12-4 finish in the 2016 season but the club is projected to win just 7.5 games according to Sports Interaction’s NFL Over/Under odds. The Raiders are the third favourite to win the AFC West division at +350 behind the Los Angeles Chargers (+125) and Kansas City Chiefs (+220).

The Rams, meanwhile, are -143 chalk to win the NFC West again in 2018, and +1100 to win the Super Bowl according to SIA’s NFL futures odds. Los Angeles went 11-5 straight up and 9-7 against the spread a year ago and the club finished first in points scored with 478 (29.9 points per game) on the campaign.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams brought in cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and wide receiver Brandin Cooks in a series of moves most Madden video game simulations wouldn’t allow. An argument could be made the Rams’ strength is on the defensive side of the ball even though their offence led the league in scoring a year ago.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips won’t have to come up with creative ways to get to the quarterback. Suh, a five-time Pro Bowler, gets to line up next to Aaron Donald, the defending NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders traded away their former DPOY a week before the start of the regular season. Khalil Mack compiled 36.5 sacks in his last three seasons but Oakland didn’t want to break the bank for the 27-year-old. Mack was traded to the Bears, along with a second round pick, for two future first round picks.

New head coach Jon Gruden is hoping to get fifth-year pro Derek Carr back on track. Carr’s name was frequently mentioned about the league’s top quarterbacks during the 2015 and 2016 campaigns but his performance was up-and-down a year ago.
