The NFL preseason hits the City of Angels as the defending Super Bowl champion L.A. Rams face the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium on Saturday night.  The Chargers are technically the home side, although both teams obviously share SoFi Stadium.

The Chargers are 3.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with a total of 30.0.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

These teams haven’t faced each other in a meaningful game since 2018, but they did also open the preseason against one another last year.  As with most preseason games, it was relatively uneventful, with the Chargers coming out on top 13-6.  Neither starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford of the Rams and Justin Herbert of the Chargers, played in the game.

Rams head coach Sean McVay has a career 6-9 record in the preseason, including 0-3 last year.  Brandon Staley went 1-2 last preseason, his first year leading the Chargers.

Los Angeles Rams

The last time we saw the Rams they were triumphantly lifting the Lombardi Trophy as just the second team ever (and coincidentally second team in a row) to win the Super Bowl in their home stadium.  That said, you likely won’t see many of those players on the field on Saturday.  Stafford won’t play as he has been battling an elbow issue throughout the offseason.  That leaves John Wolford, Bryce Perkins and Luis Perez to split quarterback duties.  Likewise, receiver Cooper Kupp and defensive end Aaron Donald probably won’t see any reps.  Donald actually considered retiring after last season, but ultimately elected to try and run it back for another shot at the Super Bowl.

The roster will look a little different this season with left tackle Andrew Whitworth retiring, edge rusher Von Miller signing in Buffalo and receiver Robert Woods traded to Tennessee.  Like most teams, the Rams are using the preseason as an open competition to fill vacant holes in the lineup.  One big question mark is at right guard, which Logan Bruss, Coleman Shelton and Tremayne Anchrum Jr. will compete for.  We could also see safety Bobby Wagner in a Rams jersey for the first time after he signed with L.A. in the offseason following 10 years in Seattle.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers narrowly missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record last season, but there’s a lot of optimism with Herbert leading the charge under centre, although he likely won’t take any snaps on Saturday.  Chase Daniel and Easton Stick are expected to share quarterback duties.  Trey Pipkins and Storm Norton should each get a lot of playing time as they battle for position at right tackle.  The Chargers also need to find a reliable backup for running back Austin Ekeler and rookie Isaiah Spiller can lock up the job with a strong preseason.

It will be interesting to see if the Chargers use the preseason to really focus on improving their run defence.  They definitely upgraded on defence with the addition of linebacker Khalil Mack and cornerback J.C. Jackson, but they’re coming off a season in which they finished 30th against the run.
