It’s another flexed Sunday night game in Week 14, and it’s a dandy: Los Angeles Rams at Chicago Bears in a potential NFC playoff preview.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The originally scheduled Sunday night game for Week 14 was Steelers at Raiders. While that was one of the best rivalries in football in the 1970s, it’s not much nowadays. Pittsburgh is a contender, but Oakland might be the league’s worst team so it was an easy call for NBC to flex in LA Rams at Chicago, the No. 2 and No. 3 media markets in the USA and two legitimate Super Bowl teams.

It’s the second time in four games the Bears have been “promoted” to prime time as they beat the visiting Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night in Week 11, 25-20. This is a break for the Rams as it sure beats a 10 a.m. Pacific time start as the original kickoff was.

Should be a fascinating matchup between one of the league’s top offences in the Rams and one of its best defences in the Bears. One could argue the two best defensive players in the league will be on the field in Rams tackle Aaron Donald, the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year and a favourite to repeat, and Bears linebacker Khalil Mack, the 2016 DPOY while with Oakland.

These franchises haven’t played since 2015 (Chicago won 37-13) when both finished with losing records and the Rams were still in St. Louis. Chicago is 6-2 against the spread (ATS) in the past eight meetings.

Los Angeles Rams

It was a great Week 13 for the Rams. Not only did they avoid a trap game in Detroit, winning 30-16, to claim the NFC West title for a second straight year, but they also took over the top spot in the NFC because New Orleans lost in Dallas on Thursday night. So if the Rams win out, the post-season in the NFC goes through Los Angeles.  Todd Gurley rushed for 132 yards and two scores in the win over the Lions. He leads the NFL with 19 TDs. L.A. was perhaps a bit flat for a while, up only 16-13 entering the fourth quarter. Jared Goff was a bit off, completing 17 of 33 for 207 yards with a pick and lost fumble. Donald had two sacks and leads the league with 16.5 of them. That’s the most by a defensive tackle through 12 games since 1982.

Chicago Bears

The Bears were coming off three straight division games over a span of 12 days and perhaps were caught in a trap game Sunday, losing 30-27 in overtime at the Giants to see their five-game winning streak end. Starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky sat his second game in a row with a shoulder injury – it would be a surprise if he didn’t play here – and backup Chase Daniel was picked off twice, one returned for a touchdown. That it went to OT was a minor miracle considering the Bears were down 27-17 with just over a minute left in regulation. Cody Parkey made it 27-20 on a 21-yard field goal and Chicago was able to recover the ensuing onside kick. The Bears tied it on a TD pass from running back Tarik Cohen as time expired. He also caught 12 passes for 156 yards. Defensive tackle Akiem Hicks had a 1-yard TD run, evoking memories of William “The Fridge” Perry.
