There’s NFL action this Thursday night … sort of. It’s a less-than-appealing matchup between the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers – two clubs with one victory each.
This might be the last game of the season either of these struggling teams has a good chance of winning.

Back in August, the Week 9 Thursday night matchup between the Raiders and 49ers looked like it would have national interest and not limited to the San Francisco Bay area as it largely does now. The Raiders had added the mega-popular Jon Gruden as their head coach in the offseason and were only two years removed from a 12-4 season and playoff berth.
The 49ers were slotted for a handful of prime-time games because they were considered a rising power under new star quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who led the team to five straight wins to close the 2017 season after coming over in trade from New England.
Needless to say, things haven’t gone well on either side of the Bay area with these clubs combining for two victories. The loser could be a big winner here in terms of getting a higher 2019 first-round draft pick. Maybe No. 1 overall.
The Raiders lead the all-time series with their neighbors 7-6, although five of those games were played while the Raiders were based in Los Angeles.
But hey, at least there’s good hockey on Thursday night: the Canadiens host the Stanley Cup champion Capitals, and the Maple Leafs welcome Ontario’s own Tyler Seguin and the Stars. Sports Interaction will have previews of those.
Oakland Raiders
Oakland came out of its bye week on Sunday and lost 42-28 at home to a not very good Indianapolis Colts team – that was the Raiders’ first game since trading top receiver Amari Cooper to Dallas for a 2019 first-round pick. Oakland was outscored 21-0 in the fourth quarter by Indy and allowed 461 yards overall. Derek Carr played well despite not having Cooper as a target, throwing for 244 yards and three scores. Carr also scored the first rushing TD of his NFL career.
The Raiders are now 2-9-1 against the spread in their past 12 games as an underdog and haven’t won any straight up. Oakland has covered nine of its past 13 following a double-digit home loss, though.
San Francisco 49ers
The Arizona Cardinals are terrible. They have two wins this season. Both are against the 49ers. San Francisco lost 18-15 in the desert on Sunday – it was an unwatchable first half with the Niners leading 5-3 at the break. They led 15-3 in the fourth quarter but allowed the game-winning 9-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds to go.
C.J. Beathard hit Marquise Goodwin on a 55-yard pass for the Niners’ only touchdown. Fellow starting receiver Pierre Garcon missed the game due to injury as did centre Weston Richburg, while linebacker Reuben Foster and defensive backs Jaquiski Tartt and Ahkello Witherspoon all left injured. The Niners are 2-5 ATS in their past seven after a loss.
