The Las Vegas Raiders look to remain undefeated when they visit Levi’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face the San Francisco 49ers. The Raiders improved their pre-season record to 2-0 with last weekend’s slim 17-16 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers return home after eking out a 15-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, but have work to do to reverse a two-game slide in pre-season action on home turf.

The 49ers sit as strengthening 3.5-point favourites on the NFL pre-season odds, with the total pegged at just 35.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Sunday’s contest brings a close to the exhibition schedule for both these teams. With last week’s victory over the Rams, Las Vegas has now won and covered in eight of 10 pre-season outings. The 49ers also return to action on a winning note, but failed to cover as 6.5-point chalk in last week’s victory over the Chargers, extending their current losing streak against the spread in the preseason to three games.

This marks the first preseason meeting between these two teams since 2011. The 49ers have largely dominated their former Bay Area neighbours in August action, winning outright in each of their past three matchups, and in eight of 12 dates since 1999. That dominance extends to the regular season, with San Francisco enjoying a 4-1 straight up and against the spread run, capped by a 34-3 rout as 1.5-point home underdogs back in November 2018.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders failed to dominate last weekend the way they did in their 20-7 preseason-opening win over Seattle, but were good enough to slip past the Rams in Los Angeles. Journeyman quarterback Nathan Peterman turned in another steady performance despite tossing two picks and getting sacked three times, while Marcus Mariota surprisingly saw no action. That is looking likely to change on Sunday. Mariota has emerged as the topic of trade speculation in recent days, and could be showcased this weekend if he has sufficiently healed from a recent quad injury.

Competition for other jobs remains fierce, most notably in the backfield. Rookie Trey Ragas took a step back in last week’s win in Los Angeles, but is likely to get one more chance in his battle with BJ Emmons for the role as backup rusher.

San Francisco 49ers

The Niners get another chance to end a dismal run on home turf, where they have lost eight of nine overall contests since the start of the 2020 NFL regular season, capped by a 19-16 loss to Kansas City in their pre-season opener.

The good news for the 49ers is the steady progress made by rookie quarterback Trey Lance. The No. 3 pick in this year’s NFL Draft struggled in last week’s joint practices with the Chargers, but overcame butterflies on game day to connect on a pair of touchdown passes. That sets the stage for an intriguing battle with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who went just 3-for-6 last weekend and ended his appearance by tossing an interception. With so much on the line under center for both these teams, expect plenty of offence on Sunday, at least for a pre-season game, as the Niners end their home slide.
