Patriots vs. Jets Point Spread: NFL Week 3 Odds, Prediction

The upbeat conclusion to the New York Jets’ Week 1 victory against Buffalo was swiftly squashed by the Cowboys last weekend, 30-10. As for the New England Patriots, maybe they need a change of scenery, as they fell in both of their home games to start the season, including 24-17 last week against the Dolphins.
This one is tough to call under the circumstances. The NFL odds play it relatively safe, placing the Patriots as slight -2.5 favourites.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
We already mentioned the losing streak in the sub-header of this preview. The New York Jets have not gotten the better of their divisional rivals since a 26-20 overtime win on December 27, 2015. That, for those keen on morbid knowledge, is the Gang Green’s only victory over the Pats in 18 tries! Even when the Jets play relatively well against the Patriots, such as last November, they still trip up (a narrow 10-3 defeat). Home, away, close calls, complete blowouts, New England almost always has the upper hand.
The Patriots already find themselves behind the proverbial eight ball this season, opening 0-2 in the standings and ATS. They were underdogs in both home games, but only slightly and lost by too many points each time.
New York has earned a 1-1 tally against the spread through two weeks of action. Their victory as slight underdogs in Week 1 was followed by a crushing loss to Dallas in Week 2 that went well beyond the +8 spread.
New England Patriots
Bill Belichick is one of the greatest head coaches in NFL history, if not the outright best. He has his work cut out for him already at this early stage of the campaign.
It was a frustrating Sunday night for Patriots fans who attended the Dolphins contest at Gillette Stadium. By the time the New England attack got anything going the club was facing a 17-3 fourth-quarter deficit. Notwithstanding two solid drives that led to touchdowns in the final frame, attempts at mustering anything when they had the ball were discombobulated and laboured. RB Rhamondre Stevenson was largely ineffective (50 yards on 15 carries), and Mac Jones didn’t have a lot to celebrate given that his 31 completions only translated to 231 yards.
Matthew Judon had a sack and four tackles, emphasizing his importance on defence. To the unit’s credit, Miami didn’t explode for points either.
CBs Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones are listed as questionable.
New York Jets
One wonders what was really going on in the minds of Jets players other than Zach Wilson as the team took the plane to Dallas for a Week 2 date with the Cowboys. The win over the Bills was extraordinary and uplifting, yet Dallas posed an altogether different challenge.
The score finished 30-10 for the Cowboys. Dallas had 26 first downs to New York’s 12, and the time of possession favoured the hosts 42:15 to 17:45. Short of the winning side scoring even more points, it’s tough to find a more lopsided series of stats than that. Four turnovers didn’t help, although two of those were Zach Wilson’s INTs when the game was mostly out of hand. The offensive line predictably struggled to contain Micah Parsons, who finished with four tackles (three for losses), two sacks, and a fumble recovery.
Really, apart from a slick 68-yard TD score by WR Garrett Wilson, the Jets accomplished nothing on offence. The Jets’ calling card, without Aaron Rodgers, is defence. That could play to their advantage against a mediocre Patriots attack.
