The New England Patriots-New York Jets AFC East rivalry has been dominated by the Patriots in recent years, but perhaps that changes Thursday to kick off Week 3 with Aaron Rodgers now under centre with Gang Green. The Jets opened as 6.5-point home favourites on the NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

If you don’t think a star quarterback determines how often an NFL team will play in primetime games, then you aren’t paying attention. The Jets will be in primetime/standalone spots nearly half their 2024 slate because of Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots post-Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are one of the most anonymous rosters in the NFL with journeyman Jacoby Brissett as their starting QB (for now), so this is their only scheduled primetime matchup.

For what it’s worth, Rodgers was 2-2 in his career against the Patriots while with the Green Bay Packers. This is the Jets’ home opener and thus Rodgers’ first game at MetLife Stadium since tearing his Achilles’ tendon just four offensive plays into the 2023 Week 1 opener.

Including playoffs, New England leads the all-time series 74-55-1. Brady completely owned the Jets but the teams split last year, each losing a very low-scoring game at home. Belichick’s final game as Patriots coach was a 17-3 loss to the Jets in Week 18 to snap the Pats’ 15-game winning streak in the series. It marked the Jets’ first win in New England since the 2010 AFC divisional playoff round and New York’s first regular-season road win against the Patriots since 2008.

New England Patriots

New England (1-1) was projected by some to be the worst team in the NFL this season (that’s clearly Carolina again), but the Pats aren’t far from a 2-0 start after a 23-20 OT loss in the home opener vs. Seattle on Sunday. The Patriots allowed the tying field goal with under a minute left in regulation and then went three-and-out in OT after getting the ball first. This is not a good offensive team and has been using a very conservative game plan thus far.

Starting QB Jacoby Brissett has thrown for only 270 total yards. The team’s wideouts had three catches for 19 yards vs. Seattle as tight end Hunter Henry did most of the work with eight catches for 109 yards.

“We definitely have to start getting the ball down the field,” first-year head coach Jerod Mayo said.

The defence has played well. Starting linebacker Ja’Whuan Bentley and left tackle Vederian Lowe are both in question after leaving Sunday injured. New England is 4-1 ATS in its past five road games.

New York Jets

The Jets (1-1) bounced back from a lopsided loss in San Francisco in the opener with a 24-17 comeback win at Tennessee on Sunday. Aaron Rodgers was solid in throwing for 176 yards and two scores. He’s the oldest player in the NFL and backup running back Braelon Allen is the youngest. Allen had a receiving and rushing score.

New York stopped the Titans on fourth-and-goal from the Jets’ 14 in the final seconds. Will McDonald IV led that Jets defence with three sacks. But that unit lost starting linebacker CJ Mosley and end Jermaine Johnson to injuries on Sunday. Mosley hopes to play Thursday, but the fear is that Johnson suffered a season-ending torn right Achilles’ tendon. The Jets are 3-9 ATS in their past 12 games.
