If ESPN was able to flex games out of the Monday night window (it’s coming), this probably would have gotten the boot because Arizona isn’t very good. In fact, Coach Kliff Kingsbury might not be back next year even though the team gave him a contract extension over the summer. Rather unusually, this is the third straight prime-time game for the Patriots.
New England has won six of the past seven in the series, including 20-17 at home in Week 12 of the 2020 season. Nick Folk kicked a 50-yard field goal as time expired. Cam Newton was the Pats’ QB then and was terrible in throwing for 84 yards and two picks. Kyler Murray threw for 170 and a pick for the Cards, while Kenyan Drake rushed for two scores.
The Patriots are 4-1 against the spread in the past five meetings.
New England Patriots
New England played on Thursday in Week 13 and lost 24-10 at home to Buffalo. The team had just 242 total yards and held possession for less than 22 minutes. Coach Bill Belichick isn’t inclined to bench starting quarterback Mac Jones yet, however. The Patriots were 3 of 12 on third down and 0 for 1 in the red zone. The team ranks tied for last in the NFL in red zone efficiency, having scored touchdowns just 12 times in 32 trips inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. Patriots centre David Andrews returned after his one-game absence due to a thigh injury, but New England was missing starting running back Damien Harris (thigh) along with tackles Isaiah Wynn (foot) and Yodny Cajuste (calf/back). New England is 1-4 ATS in its past five Monday games.
Arizona Cardinals
Arizona comes off its bye week on a two-game losing streak. Kyler Murray had missed two games with a hamstring injury but played in Week 12, a 25-24 home loss to the Chargers. He threw for 191 yards and two scores. The Cards led 24-17 with only seconds to go. James Conner had 25 carries for 120 yards, his first 100-yard rushing game in two seasons with the Cardinals. It was the first time the team had more rushing attempts than passing attempts since a Week 4 win over the Carolina Panthers. The Cards had their top two receivers, DeAndre Hopkins and Marquise Brown, on the field for the first time this season. Left tackle DJ Humphries is on injured reserve and done for the year. Arizona is 2-10 ATS in its past 12 Monday games.
