Panthers vs. Patriots Point Spread: NFL Week 4 Odds, Prediction

Two 1-2 teams match up in Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET as the Carolina Panthers take on the New England Patriots.

Carolina took advantage of several Atlanta Falcons miscues in posting their first shutout in nearly five years with a 30-0 home triumph last week. The Panthers’ defence forced three turnovers and held Atlanta to 5-for-16 on third and fourth-down conversion attempts.

The Patriots were extremely generous last week, turning the ball over five times in a 21-14 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. New England outgained Pittsburgh by 369 yards to 203, but the Pats fumbled the ball away four times and lost possession twice inside the Steelers’ five-yard line.

The Patriots are 5.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with the total set at 43.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Carolina is 2-1 against the spread, while New England is 1-2 ATS. The Panthers are 9-3 ATS in their 12 contests, dating back to last season. New England has dropped eight of its last 10 overall games and is an atrocious 2-13 in its last 15 home games. The Patriots are 0-5 against the spread in their last five outings as the favourite.

Both teams have played to the over once in three games. The two quarterbacks, Carolina’s Bryce Young at +170, and New England’s Drake Maye at +100, have solid odds to throw more than 1.5 touchdown passes.

Carolina Panthers

After five turnovers in his previous two games, Young was clean on Sunday against the Falcons. He only threw for 121 yards, but he kept possession and managed the game without any big mistakes. Ryan Fitzgerald had three field goals, Chuba Hubbard rushed for 73 yards, and the defence did the rest.

Carolina’s injury report this week needs to be cleaned up for Young to have more confidence, however. Emerging tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders exited the Atlanta contest with an injured ankle. Wide receiver Jalen Coker is already on injured reserve, while fellow receivers Xavier Legette and Tetairoa McMillan are on the daily injury update list with hamstring and calf injuries, respectively.

New England Patriots

Maye feels so close to being what the Patriots need. The franchise ruined its last first-round quarterback pick, Mac Jones, with a shoddy coaching carousel and poor quality from the wide receiver position. New England cannot afford to make the same mistake again. Tight end Hunter Henry, who had eight catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns last week, is Maye’s security blanket. He was seen limping in the second half against the Steelers. Maye and the Patriots cannot afford to lose the veteran.

Defensively, second-team All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who has been sidelined since late July with a hamstring injury, is expected back in the lineup, although how much is to be determined.

NFL Prediction: Who Will Win Panthers vs. Patriots?

Something has to give. Carolina is horrible on the road. New England is putrid at home. The Patriots should be 3-0. They’ve already given away games against Las Vegas and Pittsburgh. They can’t do the same against Carolina. Look for New England to right the ship enough to win, and the Panthers to cover, in a 24-21 Pats triumph.
