NFL Pre-Season Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Carolina and New England will not play in the 2022 regular season. They did Week 9 last year in Charlotte and the Panthers were 24-6 losers. Sam Darnold was just 16-for-33 for 172 yards, no touchdowns and three picks (on three consecutive second-half possessions). Christian McCaffrey had 106 yards from scrimmage. Pats quarterback Mac Jones, then a rookie, threw for only 139 yards with a TD and a pick. New England did rush for 151 yards and a score, and the defence dominated.

Pats coach Bill Belichick is now 4-0 in regular-season games against Darnold dating to Darnold’s Jets days, and the quarterback has thrown nine interceptions and one touchdown pass in those outings.

Belichick has arguably the most coaching security in the NFL if not all of sports, while the betting favourite to be the first coach fired this NFL season is Carolina’s Matt Rhule.

Carolina Panthers

Realistically, there are only two quarterback battles ongoing in the NFL right now, and one is with the Panthers between Baker Mayfield (No. 1 overall pick in 2018 draft) and Sam Darnold (No. 3 pick in 2018 draft). It would be a mammoth upset if Mayfield, the former Heisman winner, doesn’t beat out Darnold after being acquired from Cleveland. In the Panthers’ 23-21 Week 1 preseason win at Washington, Mayfield (who started) was 4-for-7 for 45 yards and Darnold 2-for-6 for 16 yards and a TD. “They were both in command,” coach Matt Rhule said. “Sam got us in the end zone, Baker led us down the field, so it looked like both guys played well in terms of production.” Rhule said he won’t make a decision on his starter for Week 1 against Cleveland until after this week’s joint practices at New England and Friday’s game.

Several Carolina starters sat out the opener, including star running back Christian McCaffrey (probably not playing at all this preseason) and top wideout DJ Moore. The Panthers are 0-4 ATS in their past four road games. Rhule is 2-2 in his preseason career.

New England Patriots

New England was a 23-21 home loser to the Giants in Week 1 of the preseason on a short field goal as time expired. No. 1 quarterback Mac Jones didn’t play at all but should in this one; rookie Bailey Zappe got the vast majority of the snaps and threw for 205 yards with a TD and a pick. The team’s top three running backs also sat. By all accounts, the offence has struggled in camp with Bill Belichick having handed offensive coaching duties to ex-defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and Joe Judge. They split play-calling duties in the opener. Belichick hasn’t named an official offensive coordinator to replace Josh McDaniels, now head coach of the Raiders. When asked who will call plays during the regular season, Belichick said: “Don’t worry about that. We’ll work it out.” Cornerback Joejuan Williams, a 2019 second-round pick, suffered a season-ending injury in the loss to the Giants. New England is 4-1 ATS in its past five at home. Belichick is 49-37 in the preseason with the Pats.
