Carolina Panthers vs. Detroit Lions

Point Spread: Lions -2.5

Date: Oct. 8, 1:00 PM ET

Ford Field – Detroit, Michigan

Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Lions opened as 2.5-point home favourites on the Sports Interaction NFL odds board and a 44-point over/under line was tagged on the game.

The Panthers are coming off a huge road win at New England making it four straight covers away from home.

Detroit’s defense continues to carry the team by stopping opponents on third down and letting Matt Stafford and the offense hog the time of possession. The under is 11-4 in the Lions’ last 15 games overall.

Carolina is behind Atlanta and tied with the Bucs as the second favorite to win the NFC South at +350 according to the Sports Interaction NFL futures board, while the Lions are +350 to win the NFC North behind the favored Green Bay Packers.

The over is the most popular play on this game with 95 percent of bets from Sports Interaction customers expecting the game going over the 44-point total.

Carolina Panthers

Is Carolina quarterback Cam Newton back to his regular elite self or was his outstanding performance on Sunday a product of playing against the league’s worst pass defense? The 2015 league MVP completed 22 of his 29 passes for 316 yards and his 130.8 passer rating was the second highest mark on the road in his career.

The Panthers are still missing Newton’s favorite target. Tight end Greg Olsen broke his foot two weeks ago and has been placed on the injured reserve.

Detroit Lions

There are many star players on the roster for the Lions but they continue to outperform expectations. Sunday’s divisional win came without Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford playing his best and with the Minnesota Vikings sacking him six times.

Detroit’s defence – particularly the secondary – continues to be the bright spot for the squad. The Lions are intercepting 4.8 percent of their opponent’s pass attempts, good for second best in the league.
