NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
The Jets haven’t been a favourite on the NFL odds all season long, and they will continue to be in the underdog role against Carolina at home – as the Panthers are 1.5-point favourites in this one. It’s also not a surprise that this total is in the low-40s, especially since the Panthers’ offence has struggled on the road and the Jets’ offence has been inept of late.
The Panthers are 4-2 against the spread this season, while the Jets are 3-3 ATS. Games involving both teams typically go over the total, with the over cashing in four of their six games played to this point.
Carolina Panthers
After an 0-2 start to the season, the Panthers have been a surprisingly solid team over the last month, racking up wins over the Falcons, Dolphins and Cowboys to climb back to .500 on the year. Bryce Young and the offence have steadily improved, with Carolina now sitting at 10th in success rate, fourth in EPA per rush and seventh in sacks allowed. This is a group that should see more success against the Jets on Sunday.
The defence has been an issue for the Panthers, especially on the road to this point. Carolina’s stop unit has given up at least 26 or more points to the likes of the Cardinals, Jaguars and Patriots away from home this season. However, much of that was aided by costly turnovers from Young and the Carolina offence. As long as the Panthers play a semi-clean game, the defence should be in a better position against a Jets offence that is among the worst in football.
New York Jets
The Jets are in the midst of a total rebuild, and it’s been a very difficult season for new head coach Aaron Glenn. New York has found itself to be competitive in the majority of its games this season, but just keeping things close has not been enough to pick up a victory just yet.
The primary issue for New York has been on offence, with Justin Fields struggling mightily this season, even putting his injury history aside. However, Fields should have a much easier time this week against a poor Carolina defence that ranks 27th in EPA per play and dead last in pressure-to-sack rate through six weeks. As long as the Jets avoid costly turnovers, they should be able to put up some points in this one.
NFL Prediction: Who Will Win Panthers vs. Jets?
This line feels a bit short, especially given how these teams have performed recently. Carolina certainly appears to be the better overall team as presently constructed, and it doesn’t help that the Jets have not executed well enough down the stretch of their close games this season. Ultimately, let’s look for the Panthers to take care of this one by a score, in the region of 24-20.
