After closing out their 2021 schedule with wins in each of their final four home contests, the Niners open their NFL preseason schedule perched as 2.5-point favourites. The Packers arrive in the Bay Area sporting +124 moneyline odds, and the total is pegged at 33.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Friday’s matchup at Levi’s Stadium will be the first time these two teams have faced each other since the 49ers recorded a 13-10 upset win in Green Bay during last season’s NFC Divisional Playoffs, and their first August clash since 21-10. Overall, the Packers have earned the win in four of six meetings with the Niners, including outright and against the spread victories in their past two visits to the Bay Area. However, things have not gone so well for Green Bay in preseason action of late. The Packers return to action riding a three-game straight up and against the spread losing streak in preseason action, and have won and covered just twice over their past nine August outings. The 49ers have produced slightly better results, winning five of 10 preseason contests and covering three times. Scoring has also come at a premium for both the Packers, who have averaged just seven points per game during the 2021 preseason. Conversely, San Francisco has averaged 21.3 points over its past three preseason home dates.

Green Bay Packers

Friday’s contest marks Trey Lance’s unofficial debut as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. The third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft takes over the helm after the team elected to part ways with Jimmy Garoppolo during the offseason. Lance saw action in six games for the Niners last season, including a pair of starts, and racked up a respectable 603 passing yards and five touchdown passes against just two picks. However, with head coach Kyle Shanahan recently voicing his displeasure with the team’s preseason schedule, Lance is unlikely to see action beyond the first quarter. That may be a blessing considering the struggles he has faced in training camp, particularly against a revamped defensive line that reportedly has not held back in drills.

San Francisco 49ers

With Aaron Rodgers not expected to see much action during the preseason, the Packers are expected to turn the ball over to backup Jordan Love on Friday night. Love was used sparingly during his rookie campaign in 2021, and will be aiming to prove that he has NFL starter upside during what amounts to a preseason audition. The 23-year-old aims to build on what was a steady performance last August, when he completed 68.5% of pass attempts and connected on one scoring toss. However, Love will not enjoy the luxury of veteran downfield targets like Randall Cobb and Sammy Watkins. Instead all eyes will be on rookie receiver Romeo Doubs, who has emerged as a training camp sensation after being picked late in the fourth round at this year’s NFL Draft.
