NFL Week 4 Betting Recap: Taking the Over is finally paying off

The last two NFL teams sporting unblemished against the spread records failed to pay out this past weekend, and as NFL Week 4 drew to a close, just two teams remain undefeated straight up, with the both the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles sporting 4-0 records. However, the end of season-opening ATS win streaks was not bad news for the home teams that dominated on the scoreboard this past weekend.

Here’s a closer look on how NFL Week 4 wrapped up at the sportsbook.

Home Teams Roll to Victory in NFL Week 4

After struggling at times to find the win column, home teams broke through in NFL Week 4, going 11-4-1 SU on the weekend. While those performances generated winnings for NFL betting fans betting the NFL moneyline, it was another nerve-wracking weekend for bettors on the NFL odds, with just nine of 16 favourites covering the spread.

Home favourites enjoyed some steady success for the first time this season, going 7-3 ATS, with big chalk teams easily getting the job done. Teams pegged as home chalk by five or more points covered in five of six contests, but things did not go so well for small favourites, with both the Las Vegas Raiders and San Francisco 49ers falling to outright defeat.

Double-digit favourites also produced mixed results, going 1-1 ATS to fall to just 2-2 ATS so far on the season.

The OVER Pays Out …..Finally

The boon for UNDER bettors finally came to a halt in NFL Week 4, with the OVER going 10-6 on the weekend, despite seeing the total top 50 in just six contests.

Low-scoring affairs tended to favour betting favourites in Week 4, with teams pegged as betting chalk going 4-2 ATS, including dominating shutout victories by Detroit, Houston, and Denver. Indeed, low scoring did not hinder teams vying for the big win, with four teams claiming victory by at least a touchdown in those contests.

But even with a wild 40-40 tie between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, the UNDER maintains the edge in primetime, going 2-2 on the weekend, and 8-6 overall on the season.

That trend could get extended as the NFL Week 5 kicks off with a Thursday Night Football matchup between two of the league’s stingiest teams, as the Los Angeles Rams host the San Francisco 49ers. In fact, these NFC West rivals have seen the UNDER pay out in each of their past four primetime meetings. The Rams have also seen the total go UNDER in 14 of their past 17 appearances under the lights.
