Believe it or not, we’re a quarter of the way through the NFL season. Check out the early odds for Week 5.
All the best parts of football – the hits, the great passing plays, the passion on the field – really have very little to do with the “foot” part of the sport. The kicking game has been a peripheral aspect of the game on the field for decades, usually brought to light when the kicking game goes very poorly.
However, every football bettor knows just how important those extra points and field goals are and Week 4 was an absolute disaster from that perspective. Kickers have missed a total of 18 field goals and extra points heading into the Monday Night Football matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions.
Life as a football bettors can be just as cruel and ruthless as the ups and downs of an NFL kicker. Let’s hope all your bets go through as we take an early look at the NFL Week 5 point spreads and odds.

NFL Week 5 Odds
Thursday Night Football
Point spread: Texans -2.5 / Move to -4.5
Updated reports say Andrew Luck is out tonight with his shoulder injury and Matt Hasselbeck remains questionable with a virus that had him in the hospital a couple of days ago.
Pick against the spread: Colts +2.5
Sunday, Oct. 11.
Point spread: Bills -3 / Bills -2.5
With youngster Tyrod Taylor under centre, the Bills’ offence is going to have some ups and downs. Last week, Taylor came back down to earth as Buffalo’s attack stalled a couple of times in the red zone. Even with the bye week to prepare, the Titans could struggle to run the ball, making Marcus Mariota‘s job a lot tougher.
Pick against the spread: Bills -3
Point spread: Chiefs -10 / Chiefs -9.5
The Bears aren’t a good football team – that much is obvious. That doesn’t mean they should be 10-point underdogs against a Chiefs team that ranks 29th in total defence. As long as Jay Cutler, Alshon Jeffrey and Matt Forte are on this team, they should be able to hang around with the Chiefs.
Pick against the point spread: Bears +10
Point spread: Ravens -6.5
Jump on this line before it moves up to a touchdown because this is a terrible matchup for the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland ranks 31st against the run and the Ravens need to pound the ball on the ground to be successful. Expect to see a lot of Baltimore’s running game with Joe Flacco picking his spots on play-action passes.
Pick against the point spread: Ravens -6.5
Point spread: Buccaneers -3
Jameis Winston is struggling to read coverages and just threw four interceptions last week. He should get along better against Jacksonville’s secondary but the Jags could control the clock with their ground game. T.J. Yeldon rushed for 105 yards against Indianapolis and could have a big day here.
Pick against the point spread: Jacksonville +3
Point spread: Eagles -4.5
Pick your poison here – a Saints offence that looks like it’s finally running on fumes against a Chip Kelly offence that can’t run the ball. Best bet here is under the 49-point total but take the Saints to keep it close if you want a point spread wager.
Pick against the point spread: Saints +4.5
Point spread: Bengals -3
The Seahawks are the same team they were last year, no matter if Marshawn Lynch is on the field or not. They refuse to get Jimmy Graham involved in the offence and their defence isn’t at the same level as it once was. Meanwhile, the Bengals can beat you a lot of different ways – on the ground, through the air, with defensive takeaways – and are one of the hottest teams in the league.
Pick against the point spread: Bengals -3
Point spread: Packers -9.5 / Packers -10
It’s getting to the point where you’re almost taking the Packers every week they’re at home and favoured by fewer than 10 points.
Pick against the point spread: Packers -9.5
Point spread: Falcons -8.5 / Falcons -7.5
There’s a lot to love about the Falcons’ balanced offence, but Washington’s defence is giving the team a shot each week. This should be a tight battle.
Pick against the point spread: Washington +8.5
Point spread: Cardinals -2.5
The Cards hit a pothole last weekend against Seattle. Don’t expect that to happen on consecutive weeks to one of the best teams in the NFC.
Pick against the point spread: Cardinals -2.5
Point spread: Denver -5.5
The Raiders have been a cute little story so far this season and there’s no denying the future looks bright with Derek Carr completing passes to Amani Cooper. Let’s see how they get along against this nasty defence and Peyton Manning working out of the shotgun. Spoiler: this will not end well for the Silver and Black.
Pick against the point spread: Denver -5.5
Point spread: Patriots -9
The only way to make this matchup fair would be to have Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Bill Belichick leave the stadium at half time. For Cowboys bettors, that could be your only hope with a backdoor cover.
Pick against the point spread: Patriots -9
Sunday Night Football
Point spread: Giants -7
You just never know what to expect from the Giants these days and that gives them an advantage in this matchup. You know what to expect from the 49ers and Colin Kaepernick and it isn’t good.
Pick against the point spread: Giants -7
Monday Night Football
Point spread: Chargers -3.5
The Chargers are such a tough team to gauge in these standalone games and Pittsburgh is still pretty good – even with Michael Vick under centre. Don’t forget that Pittsburgh gets WR Martavius Bryant back for this one.
Pick against the point spread: Steelers +3.5
