NFL Week 2 closes with what appears to be one of the prime-time mismatches of the entire season as the Detroit Lions make a rare appearance on Monday Night Football when they visit the Green Bay Packers, who are 11-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with a total of 48.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

It was not a good Week 1 for the NFC North Division as all four teams lost, but none was more shocking than Green Bay’s defeat. It’s the only division without a team having a victory.

This will be the second straight season the Packers have their home opener against Detroit. Green Bay rolled 42-21 in that one last year behind 168 yards rushing and two scores from Aaron Jones. He also caught a TD pass. Aaron Rodgers threw for 240 yards and two scores. It was the most points the Packers had scored at home in the series since 2011.

Matthew Stafford threw for 244 yards, two TDs and a pick for the Lions but of course was traded to the Los Angeles Rams this offseason. Including a 1994 playoff victory, the Packers are 27-3 against the Lions in the state of Wisconsin since 1992 (years ago, the Packers would play an occasional game in Milwaukee).

Detroit is 7-1 against the spread in the past eight meetings. The under is 4-1 in the previous five.

Detroit Lions

The Lions are going to be awful this year but will play hard for mega-intense first-year coach Dan Campbell. Those who bet the Lions +8.5 Week 1 at home vs. the 49ers got a shocking late reward as Detroit was down 41-17 with less than two minutes left but managed to cover the spread in a 41-33 loss. In his Lions debut, Jared Goff threw for 338 yards and three scores but had a pick-six – turnovers were his problem with the Rams. TJ Hockenson caught eight passes for 97 yards and a TD and he’s going to put up big numbers at tight end.

Top offensive lineman Taylor Decker missed last week with a finger injury and won’t play Monday. Cornerback Jeff Okudah, the No. 3 overall pick n the 2020 draft, suffered a season-ending injury. He’s starting to look like a massive bust. The Lions are 4-9 ATS in their past 13 road games.

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay was a 4-point favourite on Sunday against the Saints in a game moved from New Orleans to Jacksonville, Fla., due to damage from Hurricane Ida. That was supposed to be a huge break for the Packers, but they looked shockingly bad in a 38-3 loss. Aaron Rodgers, remember, was away from the team all off-season before showing up for training camp, and he played one of the worst games of his career in completing 15 of 28 for 133 yards and two scores.

Last week’s game was just the third time the Packers scored three or fewer points in one of Rodgers’ starts and his third career game with no touchdown passes and multiple interceptions. The 35-point loss was worst in a season opener by a team that played in either the AFC or NFC Championship Game the previous season. The Packers are 8-1 ATS in their past nine after a loss.
