Sunday Night Football Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Just a reminder that Detroit remains the only NFC team to never reach a Super Bowl and is +380 to win the NFC this season. The 2024 Lions led the NFL with 15 wins and thus obviously had home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs and were conference favourites. Had chalk held, the Lions would have hosted the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
Alas, Detroit was upset in the Divisional Round at home by Washington. That allowed No. 2 seed Philadelphia to host the conference title tilt vs. the Commanders. The Eagles won that easily and then of course captured the franchise’s second Super Bowl title. They are +800 to repeat as champions.
With the Eagles running away with the NFC East at -5000 to win it and the Lions at -150 in the NFC North, without question Sunday night’s winner could hold a vital head-to-head tiebreaker to host a potential playoff meeting. The clubs have played extra football against one another just once, way back in the 1995 Wild-Card Round. They haven’t played in the regular season since the Eagles prevailed 38-35 in Motown to kick off the 2022 season.
The Lions are 6-4 ATS in the past 10 meetings, and the over-under is 9-1.
Detroit Lions
The Lions have now incredibly won 13 straight games after a loss following their 44-22 blowout victory at Washington on Sunday. And what was different about that one is that head coach Dan Campbell told reporters afterward that he had taken offensive play-calling away from coordinator John Morton. It sure worked as Detroit racked up a season-high 226 rushing yards and 546 total yards – although the Commanders are horrible on defence. It was Campbell’s 50th career win as an NFL head coach.
QB and MVP candidate Jared Goff threw for 320 yards and three scores with no picks. That was his ninth career game with Detroit to have at least 300 yards, three pass TDs and zero picks, tying Matthew Stafford for most in team history. Of course, they were traded for each other a handful of years ago. Jahmyr Gibbs had 172 yards from scrimmage, two rushing scores and one receiving. In doing so, Gibbs became the fist player in team history to have multiple career games with at least two rushing scores and one receiving. It doesn’t appear yet that Detroit suffered any major injuries, but starting safety Kerby Joseph was out, missing a third straight game. The Lions are 6-2 ATS in their past eight.
Philadelphia Eagles
I can all but guarantee you that this game will not resemble Philly’s Monday night matchup at another terrific NFC North team in Green Bay as the Eagles won a low-scoring defensive battle, 10-7, when the Packers’ kicker missed well short a 64-yard field-goal try to tie as time expired. The game was tied 0-0 at the half, the first such NFL game to be that way since 2023. It was the fewest points in a Philly home win since 2007.
That was out of the Eagles’ bye, and they made three defensive trades during that time to boost a struggling unit. One of those additions was came up huge Monday in former Dolphins pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips. He recovered a Green Bay fumble to thwart a scoring chance late in the first half and helped make a fourth-and-1 stop late in the fourth quarter. The Packers were held scoreless through three quarters for just the third time under coach Matt LaFleur. Jalen Hurts threw a 36-yard pass to DeVonta Smith with 10:35 remaining for Philadelphia’s only touchdown. The Eagles are 6-2 ATS in their past eight.
