NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Detroit Lions are the only NFC club to never reach the Super Bowl. Back on Jan. 28 at Levi’s Stadium, it looked like that drought might end as the Lions were up 24-7 in the third quarter on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Of course, the Niners rallied for a 34-31 victory thanks in part to a fluke 51-yard catch by the Niners’ Brandin Aiyuk on a Brock Purdy pass that deflected off a defender’s facemask and into Aiyuk’s hands. That will be remembered forever in franchise history.

The Niners and Lions were the two betting favourites to win the NFC entering this season and Detroit has played up to expectations but San Francisco has not in part due to a lot of serious injuries and will not be in the postseason for the first time since 2020. The Pro Bowler Aiyuk and running back Christian McCaffrey, the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, are both out for the season among some others.

San Francisco leads the all-time series 40-28-1 (including three playoff matchups) and this is their first regular-season meeting since the 2021 season opener when the Lions were still a bad team.

Detroit Lions

Detroit was an easy 34-17 winner in Chicago on Sunday but Minnesota also won in Week 16 so the teams remain tied atop the NFC North ahead of the Lions hosting the Vikings in Week 18. That game could be not for just the division but also for the conference’s top seed after fellow contender Philadelphia lost on Sunday to fall a game back in that chase. Sunday was the Lions’ first game since losing co-No. 1 running back David Montgomery for at least the rest of the regular season, and Jahmyr Gibbs picked up the slack with 154 yards from scrimmage and a TD. Jared Goff continued his MVP-calibre season with 336 yards passing and three scores and became the fourth QB in league history with at least 800 passing yards and eight TD passes with no picks in any two-game span. His 33 pass TDs on the year are a career high and second in team history. Wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, meanwhile, became the first player in team history with at least 100 catches, 1,000 receiving yards and 10 TDs in back-to-back seasons. Detroit’s 13 wins are a single-season franchise record. It is 7-0 SU in its past seven road games.

San Francisco 49ers

The Niners were eliminated from playoff contention before they took the field Sunday and then went out and lost 29-17 in Miami – I wonder if we see more than few banged-up key San Francisco players now shut down for the season. Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, for example, hasn’t played in weeks and there’s no point bringing him back now. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw left early Sunday with an injury and as a pending free agent, it wouldn’t be smart for him to try and play the final two games. Guard Aaron Banks left with a right knee injury in the second half and we have seen the last of him in 2024. We should see Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle at least one more game as he’s 33 yards shy of becoming the fifth tight end in NFL history with four or more seasons with 1,000 receiving yards. San Francisco will become the third team in the last 15 seasons to finish with a losing record after a Super Bowl loss. It is 1-6 ATS in the past seven games.
