Jimmy Garoppolo and Matt Patricia won a lot of games during their time with the Patriots. Each is looking to build a winning culture with a new franchise but both came up short in Week 1.
Garoppolo and the 49ers are 5.5-point favourites against Patricia’s Lions on Sunday.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
The Lions lost their home opener to the New York Jets in embarrassing fashion. The Jets scored 31 unanswered points with a rookie quarterback at the helm. They might have tacked on another score had they not decided to take a knee at Detroit’s 10-yard line late in the fourth quarter.
Detroit is 3-7 against the spread (ATS) in its last 10 September games and 13-35-2 ATS in their last 52 games after conceding 30 or more points in its previous contest.
San Francisco lost but in more respectable fashion. The Minnesota Vikings were 6-point home chalk and took care of the Niners 24-16 on Sunday. The Vikes are one of the top favourites to lift the Lombardi Trophy at Sports Interaction’s NFL futures board.
Despite the setback, San Fran is still 5-1 straight up and 4-2 ATS with Garoppolo as the starting quarterback.
Detroit hired Matt Patricia to replace Jim Caldwell as the team’s head coach with the hopes he could turn the franchise in the right direction. The first result has many asking whether Patricia is the latest in a long line of former Bill Belichick coordinators to flop as head coaches.
The result against the Jets was the second straight contest a Patricia-led defence has allowed 40 or more points. The Patriots surrendered 41 to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII with Patricia as the defensive coordinator.
It wasn’t just the defence that was ugly for the Lions in Week 1. Quarterback Matt Stafford was picked off four times and Detroit’s three running backs combined for 34 yards on 13 attempts.
San Francisco 49ers
It’s only the second week of the campaign, but the Niners are already dealing with an injury crisis on their offensive line. Rookie right tackle Mike McGlinchey finished Sunday’s game against the Vikings at right guard because of injuries to starting RG Mike Person and his backup, Josh Garnett.
McGlinchey was taken with the ninth pick in the first round of the 2018 draft to anchor the right side of San Fran’s offensive line. The unit will be weaker if McGlinchey is forced to play inside moving forward.
Jimmy Garoppolo lost for the first time as a starting QB in the NFL. He was 7-0 in seven starts with the Patriots and Niners before losing last week’s game at Minnesota.
