Jets vs. Vikings Point Spread: NFL Week 5 Odds, Prediction
The stage is set at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London. No, it’s not a Spurs-Arsenal Premier League derby, it’s the NFL! The New York Jets, coming off a dispiriting 10-9 defeat to the Denver Broncos, will clash with the – get this – undefeated, Sam Darnold-led Minnesota Vikings. As a reminder, kick-off is at 9:30 AM Eastern on Sunday, October 6.
Our NFL odds believe in the Vikings, who are currently pinned as -3 favourites.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
There are multiple storylines heading into this one. First, Jets QB Aaron Rodgers – long-time Green Packer – is facing a familiar NFC North foe. That foe, the Vikings, are quarterbacked these days by Sam Darnold, whom the Jets drafted in 2018.
The Gang Green is making its second London-bound appearance. They tussled with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021 and lost 27-20. Minnesota is making its fourth all-time English appearance. They have a perfect 3-0 record, with wins over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013, the Cleveland Browns in 2017, and the New Orleans Saints in 2022.
As for direct head-to-head matchups, the Vikings ride a three-game winning streak over the Jets, with the most recent win two seasons ago in 2022.
New York Jets
It is a New York thing or an Aaron Rodgers thing? Probably a little bit of column A and B. Whatever the case, there appear to be headline-grabbing stories every week about this ensemble.
The most recent stop on the 2024 roller coaster ride was an uninspired 10-9 loss at home at a soggy MetLife Stadium to the Denver Broncos. The week after the Jets talked about “handling success” in the media, they committed 13 penalties for 90 yards – many by the offensive line – went 4-for-17 on third down, rushed for 64 yards, and missed a critical field goal late in the fourth quarter. Speaking of the o-line, Rodgers was sacked five times and felt 14 QB hits. Probably not good for a 40-year-old.
The weapons are there: Allen Lazard, Mike Williams, Garrett Wilson, and Breece Hall. At the time of writing (Wednesday afternoon) Davante Adams might be on their roster soon. Head coach Robert Saleh has to figure this out.
Minnesota Vikings
On the topic of coaches making the right calls and decisions, how about Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota? The wonder kid from two seasons ago when the Vikings went 13-4 is at it again, this time with former Jet Darnold at QB.
Their most recent conquest was at Lambeau Field where their spirits usually go to die. They won this time, beating the Packers 31-29, although it was closer than it should have been given the 28-0 second-quarter score. That’ll happen when getting outscored 22-3 in the final period. They don’t win at Green Bay often so they surely lapped it up, however stressful the finish was.
Darnold is ninth among QBs with 932 yards (WR Justin Jefferson has collected 358 of them), 233.0 yards per match, and is just outside the top 10 with an honourable 68.9 per cent completion percentage.
The Vikings are in the process of perfecting the “bend but don’t break defence,” conceding a dangerous 349.3 total yards per game, but only 14.8 points. LB Pat Jones II is a force to be reckoned with, tallying five sacks so far. Fellow LB Kamu Grugier-Hill has himself a pair of INTs through four weeks.
