The New York Jets entered the 2024 season with relatively high expectations. Should Aaron Rodgers stay healthy, there is no reason why they don’t have a shot at a nice season. Week 1’s 32-19 loss in San Francisco may have put some of the excitement in check. The Titans were not on many people’s minds this offseason, and they gave few reasons to get excited by losing an incredibly winnable game to the Bears, 24-17.

Our NFL odds feel the visiting Jets will take care of business. New York is a -3.5 favourite for this contest, with the over-under tabulated for 40.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

This isn’t an AFC matchup that conjures up many memories. They haven’t played since 2021 and even that game was odd. It was one of the rare solid Zach Wilson performances. He threw for 297 yards that day to go along with 2 TDs in a 27-24 Jets overtime win. The Gang Green and Titans met three years before that (Tennessee victory in 2018), and another three seasons before then (Jets win in 2015). Nine years to go through a trio of contests isn’t much data.

The dose of reality the Jets got on Monday night in Week 1 dropped them to 0-1 against the spread to start the new season. Similarly, the Titans’ relative ineptitude sunk them to a 0-1 debut.

It’s hard to assess this 2024 Jets squad vis-à-vis last season for one obvious reason. For the stats fans out there, they went 3-5 away from home, but one assumes they should fare better with Rodgers under centre. New York has covered the spread only twice on their travels dating back to last season, going 2-6-1 in the process.

Maybe Tennessee’s moribund start in Chicago wasn’t a surprise. They were an awful 1-7 away from home in 2023. Conversely, they went a respectable 5-3 in front of their supporters (one game was in London). Their efforts at home versus the spread translated to a solid 5-2-1 tally.

New York Jets

Who is to blame for the 32-19 drubbing at the hands of the 49ers? How could head coach Robert Saleh not be more ready to face an organization and coach he worked with for four years? Why wasn’t Rodgers better? Etc. Welcome to the New York circus.

No, it didn’t look great. Yes, the defence should have done a better job plugging run gaps given that they faced a backup – the Jets allowed 180 yards on the ground. It also couldn’t get off the field, with the Niners executing 70 plays and holding the ball for over 38 minutes. As for Rodgers, one supposes he did what he could with his limited time in action, although he didn’t wow anybody (13-for-21, 167 yards, one TD, one pick).

The game was so out of hand that New York’s third major was courtesy of a Tyrod Taylor to Allen Lazard connection in the final minutes, with Rodgers mulling the game from the sideline. The oft-vaunted Garrett Wilson hauled in six passes for 60 yards.

Tennessee Titans

On the other hand, the Titans don’t garner nearly as much attention as the Rodgers-led Jets. They should, considering how they let Week 1 slip through their fingers.

The match was there for the taking. Will Levis was playing relatively well, Tennessee had a 17-0 second-quarter advantage, and the defence made number one overall draftee Caleb Williams look mediocre. The worst part is they made Williams look mediocre all game long, yet still lost 24-17. Levis is a young QB, entering only his second season, but interceptions like the one he tossed in the fourth quarter that truly turned the tide cannot happen again.

New signings RB Tony Pollard and WR Calvin Ridley were decent but not involved as much as they could have been. Veteran S Amani Hooker led the way with a quintet of solo tackles.
