The New York Jets and Washington were in regular-season form during their recent joint practice – at least, from a temperament standpoint. After a brawl broke out between the teams at practice late last week, it will be interesting to see if the ill will carries over into Thursday’s pre-season encounter at FedExField. The Jets are coming off an impressive 17-0 win over Atlanta in Week 1, while Washington dropped a 26-17 decision to New England.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

This game has seen the kind of line movement you only encounter during the regular season. After opening as a 3 ½-point favorite, Washington is now down to -1.5 – though that might have more to do with the optimism surrounding Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold than anything the hosts have done. But bettor beware: Even though it’s the pre-season, New York has successfully covered just twice in its previous nine road games.

Most games are seeing a bump in the totals after last week’s surprising point surge – but even with a slight uptick from the earliest opening odds, this game still sits below the 40-point plateau at 39.5. New York has gone below the total in seven of its previous 10 games overall. Washington has the same totals record in its past 10 home contests, and is riding a four-game consecutive unders streak into Thursday’s showdown.

New York Jets

Look for Darnold to get plenty of work in this one as he resumes his quest to unseat veteran journeyman Josh McCown as the Week 1 starter. One weapon he won’t have at his disposal: wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, who continues his recovery from offseason ankle surgery and won’t get to face his former team. But Darnold looked terrific in his NFL debut against the Falcons and makes the Jets a decent option at +115 to win outright.

Washington Redskins

While there remains plenty of mystery surrounding how Washington will line up on offence in this one, head coach Jay Gruden has confirmed that the defensive starters will be limited to two series at the most. There’s a good chance Alex Smith will also see limited action in this one after sitting out the pre-season opener. Washington will be looking to bounce back after having failed to cover in any of its previous four meetings with New York.
