The New England Patriots are coming off a heartbreaking 35-29 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys but remain just two games back of the Bills heading into Sunday afternoon’s clash at Gillette Stadium. After enjoying a bye last weekend, the New York Jets return to action looking to rebound after dropping a 27-20 decision in Atlanta that marks the team’s fourth straight road loss, and 10th defeat in 11 away contests since the start of the 2020 NFL campaign.

Currently, with 86 per cent of bets laid on New England, the Patriots have climbed to 7.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, since opening at -7. The total has remained relatively stable, dipping slightly to its current position 43, since opening at 43.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Sunday’s matchup marks the second meeting of the season between these AFC East rivals. The Patriots romped to a 25-6 victory in their Week 2 visit to the Big Apple, extending their current straight up win streak against the Jets to 11 games. Overall, the Patriots have tallied 12 straight regular season home wins over New York since 2008, with each of the past five victories coming by wide double-double margins. With the Jets scoring 14 or fewer points in eight of their past 10 dates with the Patriots, the UNDER currently enjoys an 8-3 run in totals betting. However, the OVER has prevailed in three of their past five matchups, including each of their past two clashes at Gillette Stadium.

New York Jets

The Jets are hoping that a rest does them some good after stumbling to a 1-4 straight up start. With Zach Wilson struggling at times under centre in his rookie season, the Jets offence currently ranks dead last in several statistical categories, including points per game, passing yards per game, and total yards per game. Wilson failed to find the end zone and compiled just 192 passing yards last time out against Atlanta, fuelling speculation the team may seek veteran help for the beleaguered rookie. However, Wilson has shown flashes of his potential, particularly in the team’s 27-24 comeback win over Tennessee three weeks ago.

New England Patriots

New England’s own rookie passer has also experienced some growing pains during his first season. However, Mac Jones has shown clear improvement over the past few weeks, tossing for five scores while leading the Patriots to a single win and a pair of narrow defeats. However, success has eluded the Patriots on home turf so far this season. Last weekend’s offensive performance was welcome sight after the Patriots averaged just 15.3 points per game while falling to defeat in their first three home dates of the campaign. The upside for New England has been its ability to largely contain opposing offences when playing at home, limiting visiting squads to 20 or fewer points in eight of their past 12, powering an 8-3-1 run for the UNDER.
