Jets vs. Lions Point Spread: NFL Week 1 Odds, Prediction
The Jets finished last place in the AFC East in 2017 but their 5-11 finish to the season was much better than many projected. New York went 9-6-1 ATS but just 1-4-1 against the number as an away underdog.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Gang Gang should be better this year, but don’t expect any miracles out of Darnold. Sports Interaction lists the team’s season win total at 6 (Over -139) and no club has longer odds to win the Super Bowl than the Jets at +15,000.
The Lions are among the biggest favourites on the NFL Week 1 betting board and were giving as many as 7 points to the Jets at Sports Interaction. The line has stayed, for the most part, a half point below the key number at 6.5 points. Detroit went 4-2-1 against the spread as a betting favourite a year ago.
Quarterback Matt Stafford battled a hand injury for much of last season which played a part in the Lions’ inability to sneak into the playoffs. Detroit went 9-7 straight up and 8-7-1 against the spread a year ago with the Over cashing in 10 of its 16 games.
New York Jets
The road was not kind to the Jets a season ago. NYJ averaged a league-low 235.6 offensive yards per game away from its home confines in 2017. Darnold will become just the third quarterback to make his first NFL start on MNF since 2008.
Detroit Lions
Detroit turns a new page in its franchise this season with the appointment of Matt Patricia as the club’s new head coach. He spent 14 years with the New England Patriots and served the last five years as Bill Belichick’s defensive coordinator.
The Lions have the misfortune of playing in arguably the toughest division in the National Football League. The Vikings and Packers are both projected to win 10 games this season according to SIA’s NFL team Over/Unders, and the Chicago Bears made a significant improvement to their defence after acquiring Pro Bowl edge rusher Khalil Mack from the Oakland Raiders.
