Week 1 in the NFL concludes Monday with a possible Super Bowl LIX preview as Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets visit the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers.
San Francisco opened as 4-point favourites on the NFL odds.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
There used to be doubleheaders to conclude Week 1 around the NFL, but that’s not the case in 2024 as Jets-49ers stands alone – and it certainly has enough of a storyline by itself with four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers really making his Jets debut. Of course, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles tendon just four snaps into his Jets career on Monday night in Week 1 last year and didn’t make it back. The team went into the tank without the future first-ballot Hall of Famer.
So much of that franchise is tied into Rodgers for 2024 and many believe he has way too much power as it is. If the Jets miss the playoffs again, Rodgers probably retires for good and ownership cleans house. If they win the Super Bowl, Rodgers’ legend only grows. He’s from the Bay area and played collegiately at Cal.
San Francisco has reached two of the past five Super Bowls but ran into Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes in each and the Niners blew leads and lost both of them, including this past February in overtime in Las Vegas. The championship window is still open, but this might be the last, best chance for this group because young QB Brock Purdy is going to get very expensive to keep after 2024.
The 49ers are 11-3 all-time vs. the Jets and won the last meeting 31-13 in New Jersey early in the 2020 season when Rodgers was still in Green Bay and Purdy at Iowa State.
New York Jets
The Jets were a pathetic offensive team in 2023 without Aaron Rodgers but could be frightening with him as New York has one of the most electric young running backs and receivers in the NFL in Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson, respectively. Wilson was the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year but his numbers dropped significantly in 2023 with the quarterback musical chairs. Hall might have been the ’22 OROY but tore his ACL fairly early in the season. He came back slowly at first in 2023 but then took off as he got healthy. The success of that unit will all come down to a very questionable offensive line. Rodgers has won 10 straight starts on Monday Night Football.
The defence should remain among the NFL’s best led by Pro Bowlers at defensive tackle in Quinnen Williams and cornerback in 2022 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner. The Jets traded for Pro Bowl pass-rusher Haason Reddick from Philadelphia this offseason … but he’s holding out for an extension or trade. The fines for Reddick’s holdout increase dramatically now that it’s game week so we will have to see if he reports and plays. Reddick had 11 sacks last year with the Eagles.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers had issues with three offensive stars in running back Christian McCaffrey, left tackle Trent Williams and receiver Brandon Aiyuk during training camp/preseason either due to injury or contract issue. But all should play Monday now that Williams and the team have agreed on a reworked deal. Thanks in large part to those guys, Niners quarterback Brock Purdy averaged 9.6 yards per pass attempt last season, an NFL single-season record (minimum 350 attempts). San Francisco also led the NFL in yards per play overall at 6.6.
Rookie first-round receiver Ricky Pearsall was to be part of the 2024 rotation but will miss at least the first four games after being shot in the chest during a robbery attempt over the weekend. Pearsall will be OK eventually but is on the reserve/non-football injury list. The Niners were 0-2 on Monday nights in 2023 and 12-3 in all other games. They were the only NFL team last year to rank Top 3 in scoring offence and defence.
