Jaguars vs. Saints Point Spread: NFL Preseason Week 2 Odds, Prediction
The Jaguars’ competition isn’t as strong with 2021 first-overall pick Trevor Lawrence all but certain to take over the franchise, but Gardner Minshew might have something to say about that.
In New Orleans, Sean Payton has shown love to Taysom Hill in the past but hasn’t declared a starter for the season just yet and Jameis Winston is a viable, and likely more balanced option too. Kickoff at Mercedes Benz Stadium is set for 8 p.m. EST.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Recent history is ugly for Jacksonville. 10 straight losses overall, nine straight on the road, and 13 in a row against the NFC. Jacksonville’s also failed to cover in their last five meetings against NFC clubs. The glass half-full ideology is this has gifted them with what’s supposed to be a generational talent in Lawrence, who will at worst make these numbers more bearable.
The Saints have covered in six of their last seven against Jacksonville and are 8-3-1 against the spread in the last 12 overall. They’ve also covered in five of their last six against the AFC South.
New Orleans is a four-point favourite with the total listed at 39 points on Sports Interaction.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jags lost 23-13 at home to Cleveland in Week 1 in a game that saw all four quarterbacks on their roster get significant reps. Presumable first string and backup pivots Lawrence and Minshew got the fewest, with Lawrence completing six of nine passes for 71 yards and Minshew four of eight for 47 yards with an interception.
C.J. Beathard, who came over in free agency from the 49ers, led all Jaguars quarterbacks with 13 completions on 16 attempts for 102 yards and a touchdown. 23-year-old Josh Hammond caught six balls for 52 yards while veteran receiver Tavon Austin had four receptions for 52 yards and a score.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints dropped a close contest in Week 1 at Baltimore by a score of 17-14 as all eyes were on the quarterback play of Hill and Winston. Hill started the game and finished with eight completions on 12 attempts for 81 yards while Winston went seven of 12 for 96 yards. Both threw an interception while Winston threw the only passing touchdown for New Orleans.
Tony Jones put forth an excellent showing at running back, rushing for 82 yards on just seven attempts while also catching five passes for 38 yards. Safety Eric Burrell was another standout with six tackles and a sack in the loss.
