This might be a blowout with the Eagles as 7.5-point favourites on the NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

On the original NFL schedule, Jacksonville at Philadelphia was the Sunday night game in Week 9, and it’s very rare for the Eagles to get flexed out of primetime as they are one of the more popular franchises in the league. However, this was bumped out in favor of Colts-Vikings because the Jaguars aren’t any good, and are the +7.5 underdogs on the NFL odds board.

One storyline for this one is a second return to Philadelphia for Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson. He was in the same role with the Eagles from 2016-20 and led the franchise to its only Super Bowl title following the 2017 campaign. Pederson was dumped with a 4-11-1 mark in 2020 and eventually hired by Jacksonville ahead of the 2022 season.

If things don’t turn around in the second half of this season, it’s unlikely that Pederson returns to Jacksonville in 2025. It’s no sure thing that Pederson’s replacement in Philly, Nick Sirianni, is back next year, either, and in fact he almost surely will not be should the team miss the playoffs. There have been reports that Sirianni and QB Jalen Hurts don’t always see eye-to-eye.

Only seven all-time meetings between the franchises and all in the regular season with the Eagles leading 4-3. They won the last matchup 29-21 at home in the 2022 season, Pederson’s first time back. Philadelphia is 4-1 ATS in the past five.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars opted not to take their bye week after playing back-to-back games in London and lost their first true home game since Week 5 on Sunday, 30-27 to Green Bay. Jacksonville did rally from down 10 with under six minutes left to tie it at 27-all but left too much time left on the clock, and the Packers won it on a walk-off 24-yard field goal. The Jags were playing without injured No. 1 running back Travis Etienne Jr., and their top three receivers, Christian Kirk, Gabe Davis and stellar rookie first-round pick Brian Thomas Jr. all get injured. Kirk had been on the trade market but is done for the season. Too early to know on the others, although an early report that Thomas might miss 2-4 weeks apparently was wrong and he might play Sunday. It’s a shame all these injuries have hit as the Jags are averaging 28.0 PPG in their past four after only 15.0 PPG in the first four. QB Trevor Lawrence has a 109.0 passer rating in his past four after 78.9 in the first four. Starting cornerback Ronald Darby and left guard Ezra Cleveland both also left injured Sunday and were unable to return. Jacksonville has lost seven straight road games.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have looked so much better out of their bye and improved to 3-0 since with a shockingly easy 37-17 win in Cincinnati on Sunday. Quarterback Jalen Hurts rushed for three scores, his third career game with three rushing TDs. That’s a league record. Hurts had seven turnovers in Philadelphia’s first four games — the second most in the league at that point — but has zero during the three-game winning streak. Saquon Barkley continued his huge first season in Philly with 108 yards on the ground Sunday. Yet the Eagles didn’t manage a first-quarter point yet again and have become the first team since the 1991 Packers with zero first-quarter points through the first seven games of a season. The only NFL team to make the playoffs with zero first-quarter points through seven games was the 1933 Chicago Bears. Top Eagles cornerback Darius Slay left Sunday’s win with a groin injury. Philadelphia is 1-5 ATS in its past six at home.
