Jaguars vs. Chargers Point Spread: NFL Week 3 Odds, Prediction
Herbert suffered a fractured rib cartilage in last Thursday’s 27-24 loss at Kansas City, but stayed in and threw a touchdown after the fact.
Jacksonville got in the win column in convincing fashion last weekend by defeating Indianapolis 24-0. The presence alone of head coach Doug Pederson has turned Jacksonville into a much better team, and likely away from being a lottery pick once again.
Kickoff at SoFi Stadium goes at 4:05 p.m. EDT, with Los Angeles a nine-point favourite at home and the over-under at 48 on the NFL odds.
NFL Week 3 Point Spread and Betting Analysis
With their flashy offence, it’s somewhat of a surprise that the Chargers are 2-0 against the spread with both contests finishing under the total. Still, the over is 6-2 in Los Angeles’ last eight games and 4-1 in their last five at home. Head-to-head, the Chargers have covered in nine straight games against the Jaguars. Jacksonville is also 0-5 ATS in their last five on the road.
In their last 10 meetings, Los Angeles has averaged 32 points per game against the Jaguars. But through two games this season the Chargers are averaging 24 points, which is by no mean an issue but a somewhat underwhelming start to their campaign. Regardless, Herbert and the Chargers will be a trust test for a Jacksonville defence that posted a rare NFL shutout in Week 2.
Jacksonville Jaguars
2021 first-overall pick Trevor Lawrence has enjoyed a much better start this season (just maybe Doug Pederson is a slight upgrade over Urban Meyer). Lawrence has 510 yards to go with three touchdowns and one interception so far and has found a strong connection with free agent addition Christian Kirk, who’s 195 receiving yards leads Jaguars skill players on offence. James Robinson’s next with 130 rushing yards, and so far is Jacksonville’s main running back with 34 carries to Travis Etienne’s 13.
Defensively, Jacksonville is eighth in the NFL with 304 yards allowed per game. They’ve been extremely stout against the run as they are one of three NFL teams giving up fewer than 70 yards rushing per game so far. To top it all off, Jacksonville’s +5 turnover ratio is a league best.
Los Angeles Chargers
Both Herbert and receiver Keenan Allen were listed as limited in Wednesday’s practice. Allen missed Los Angeles’ Week 2 loss with an hamstring injury and his status is still uncertain for this Sunday, unlike Herbert who is just day-to-day. Centre Corey Linsley and cornerback J.C. Jackson both didn’t practice Wednesday, and both would be meaningful absences.
Without Allen, both Gerald Everett and Mike Williams have stepped it up for the Chargers. Everett has a team-high 125 yards of offence from the tight end position while Williams went for 113 yards a highlight-reel touchdown at Kansas City.
On defence, Khalil Mack has been an absolute force with 3.5 sacks, three tackles for a loss, and eight total tackles through his first pair of contests as a Charger.
