Chargers at Chiefs

It’s a pivotal AFC West clash on Sunday as the 6-7 Kansas City Chiefs look to keep their fading playoff hopes alive against the 9-4 Los Angeles Chargers.

There’s been some significant movement on the spread as the line was as low as KC -4, but has been bet up to KC -5.5 as of Thursday afternoon. That shift is enough for me to take the points as I think this will be a tight, low scoring game.

I’m a little surprised the number is growing so heavily in favour of the Chiefs, but I suspect it’s because bettors are banking on Kansas City playing desperate football. However, the Chargers still have a lot to play for as they chase down Denver for the AFC West lead, plus divisional games tend to be close.

L.A. has already beaten the Chiefs once this season, 27-21 in Brazil in Week 1, and I’m very wary of Kansas City covering, given they’re 0-5 against the spread in their last five games.

The early forecast is showing temperatures below freezing at Arrowhead on Sunday, which could hurt the ability for both teams to throw long balls down the field. That’s enough for me to take the Under, especially given the fact that the Chargers play at the fifth-slowest pace in the NFL.

Pick: Chargers +5.5, Under 41.5

Bills at Patriots

The 11-2 New England Patriots can essentially lock up the AFC East division with an 11th straight win this week when they host the 9-4 Buffalo Bills.

This is another game that’s seen a big shift on the spread. Buffalo opened as a 4.5-point favourite, but that’s dropped to -1. That basically makes this game a pick’em and I love taking a home dog in a pick’em.

The Patriots are rested as they’re coming off a bye, which gives Coach of the Year favourite Mike Vrabel two weeks to figure out how to slow down Josh Allen. And that’s where Vrabel’s focus will be as the Bills don’t have anything going for them outside of their franchise QB.

Drake Maye and Rhamondre Stevenson should pick apart Buffalo’s 28th ranked run defence.

Pick: Patriots +1

Lions at Rams

It should be a shootout at SoFi Stadium this week as high powered offences go head-to-head, with the 8-5 Detroit Lions visiting the 10-3 L.A. Rams.

L.A. opened as a 4-point favourite, but that number has been bet up to -6. That scares me a little given this is the same team that lost to Carolina two weeks ago.

I think I’ll focus on the total in this game and taking the Over seems like a no-brainer to me. Both teams have top-five scoring offences with average defences. That’s a recipe for a lot of points even if 55 is a big number to reach.

Take the Over before it climbs any higher.

Pick: Over 55

SNF Vikings at Cowboys

There will be some desperate football played in Texas on Sunday night as the 6-6-1 Dallas Cowboys and the 5-8 Minnesota Vikings each sit outside of the playoffs.

Dallas is a little more rested after a 44-30 loss against Detroit last Thursday, but it’s hard to figure this team out. The Cowboys have posted a strong 4-1 home record, while getting beat up at 2-5 on the road.

Unfortunately, the Vikings have been even worse, posting a losing record both at home and on the road. However, Minnesota has had a much tougher schedule than Dallas, so I think the Vikings are well prepared to hang around in this game.

Pick: Vikings +6

MNF Dolphins at Steelers

It’s the Monday Nighter no one asked for as the 7-6 Pittsburgh Steelers host the 6-7 Miami Dolphins. Anyone figure out the 6-7 meme yet?

Shockingly, Miami comes in as one of the hotter teams in football, winning four straight and five of their last six. That will be tested against a Steelers squad that has a firm grasp on the AFC North thanks to a winning home record.

I lean Pittsburgh in this game. While the Dolphins are winning, they haven’t blown anyone out and their last three dubs came against teams already eliminated from the playoffs.

The Steelers are always a tough home team and with the weather calling for snow and below freezing temperatures, I like them to cruise against a Miami team that historically struggles in cold weather.

Pick: Steelers -3.5
