It’s a pair of 0-1 NFC East teams in the Thursday night game to kick off Week 2 of the NFL season, as the New York Giants visit the Washington Football Team, which will have to start its backup quarterback. The WFT is a 3-point favourite to win on the NFL odds, with a low total of 41 points.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

As division rivals, these clubs play twice every regular season – Washington goes to New Jersey in Week 18. Last year, New York won both games, but by only a combined four points. The game in Maryland was 23-20. Giants QB Daniel Jones threw for 212 yards and a TD, but the real story was five Washington turnovers. The Giants didn’t give the ball away once.

Alex Smith threw for 325 yards with a TD and three picks in a losing effort, but he’s now retired. Terry McLaurin and Cam Sims each had 100-yard receiving games and both are still with the WFT.

All-time, these clubs have met 178 times. Washington is 36-44-1 at home in this series and is hosting a Thursday night game for the first time since 2017 when it beat the Giants 20-10. New York, though, is 3-1 in this series on Thursdays.

The road team is 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings.

New York Giants

Go ahead and put Giants second-year head coach Joe Judge on the hot seat. His team was largely dominated at home in Week 1, losing 27-13 to the Denver Broncos. Judge challenged a Denver touchdown and that was moronic because all scoring plays are reviewed regardless so he lost a second-half timeout. Twitter had fun with that. Former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Saquon Barkley played for the first time since tearing his ACL in Week 2 last year but wasn’t much of a factor with 26 yards on 10 carries and one catch for one yard. Big-ticket free-agent receiver Kenny Golladay caught four balls for 64 yards. Top tight end Evan Engram didn’t play due to a calf injury and isn’t likely to Thursday. The Giants are 1-4 ATS in their past five as dogs.

Washington Football Team

Washington was upset at home by the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1, 20-16, and lost veteran starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to a hip injury. He has been placed on injured reserve, which means a minimum of three games out, but Fitz is more likely going to miss 6-8 weeks. Taylor Heinicke completed 11 of 15 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown in relief of Fitzpatrick and will start Thursday – he last started a regular-season game on Dec. 23, 2018 with the Panthers under Ron Rivera. Heinicke did start Washington’s wild-card loss to Tampa Bay last season and played pretty well. Kyle Allen will serve as the No. 2 quarterback. There had been some speculation that Rivera might sign free-agent Cam Newton considering their time spent together in Carolina but that’s not happening for now. Washington is 1-5 ATS in its past six as a home favourite.
