Giants vs. Commanders Point Spread: NFL Week 1 Odds, Prediction

One of the marquee matchups in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season pits the New York Giants against the NFC East rival Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon at Northwest Stadium in Washington, D.C. Expectations are sky high in the nation’s capital after the Commanders compiled a 12-5 record last season and reached the NFC Championship before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. New York, on the other hand, slumped to a 3-14 record.

Unsurprisingly, Washington swept the 2024 regular-season series between these two teams. The Giants had previously won three in a row and eight of 10 in the historic matchup.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Commanders come in as considerable -6 favourites (-110) on the NFL odds board, making the Giants +6 underdogs (-110). On the money line, the home side is -275 and the visitors are +225. The game total is set at 45.5 points, with the over priced at -115 and the under checking in at -105.

Heading into last year, the Giants covered the spread in four consecutive head-to-head games (3-0-1 SU during that stretch). The Commanders won and covered both of the 2024 meetings. In the last seven encounters, the under is 4-2-1.

New York Giants

After going 9-7-1 in his first season at the helm in New York, head coach Brian Daboll saw his team struggle to records of 6-11 and 3-14. Daboll somehow survived last year’s disaster with his job still intact, but it goes without saying that the pressure is on in 2025, and the leash is extremely short.

That may be part of the reason why veteran Russell Wilson is starting at quarterback instead of first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart. Obviously Dart is the future of that position for the Giants, but he probably isn’t ready quite yet, and Daboll can’t afford to be hit with a bunch of early-season losses.

Washington Commanders

No team made bigger strides from where it was prior to 2024 than Washington. In the first year under head coach Dan Quinn – and more notably in the first year with Jayden Daniels under center – the Commanders rolled to a wild-card spot in the NFC and defeated both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions in the playoffs.

What’s in store for their encore performance? Well, the offence could be even better with the addition of receiver Deebo Samuel. Terry McLaurin finally inked a contract extension, so he will be on the field in Week 1. If linebackers Von Miller, 36, and Bobby Wagner, 45, still have anything left in the tank, Washington’s defence could also be a formidable unit.

Who Will Win Giants vs. Commanders?

Quarterback, of course, is the most important position in sports. When a QB matchup is as lopsided on paper as this one between Daniels and Wilson, it does not bode well for the team with the lesser of the two players. Daniels threw for 4.568 yards last season with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions to go along with 891 rushing yards and six scores. Wilson is 36 years old and has not won a playoff game since 2019.

New York’s offence cannot be trusted. Even if Daniels and company don’t go crazy against a talented group of Giants linebackers, the Commanders should still be able to win and cover the spread. Give me Washington to prevail 24-17.
