Giants vs. 49ers Point Spread: NFL Week 3 Odds, Prediction

The San Francisco 49ers are 10.5-point favourites on the NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

There was a scenario last season where the Giants would have visited the 49ers in the wild card round if a few Week 18 games had gone a certain way, but it didn’t happen as New York ended up in Minnesota. This writer doesn’t expect New York to be a playoff team this year, but San Francisco absolutely will be barring major injury and is my choice to win the NFC after losing in last season’s title game in Philadelphia.

These teams have met a combined 42 times in regular season and postseason games, with each winning 21 and they are separated by only 22 points. Since the Giants’ victory in San Francisco in the 2011 NFC Championship Game, the teams have alternated victories in their six meetings. The last was early in the 2020 season and the Niners rolled in New Jersey 36-9.

New York Giants

The Giants are rather fortunate to not be 0-2. They were destroyed in Week 1 and then fell behind the consensus worst team in the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals, 28-7 late in the third quarter Sunday only to rally for a 31-28 victory  — tying the biggest comeback history in team history. Daniel Jones threw for 321 yards and two scores, and Graham Gano hit the winning field goal from 34 yards out with 19 seconds to go. Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley had a rushing and receiving TD in the comeback but appeared to injure his ankle late and was helped off by the training staff. The quick turnaround obviously doesn’t help his chances of playing. Barkley also has a history of ankle injuries. He missed three games in 2019 with a right ankle injury and four games in 2021 with a left ankle injury. The team’s top offensive lineman, Andrew Thomas, didn’t play at all. The Giants will stay in the Phoenix area rather than fly back East from Arizona.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers have scored 30 points in each of their first two games, and if they continue to do that they’ll probably win the Super Bowl because their defence is very rarely going to allow that many. San Francisco continued its regular-season dominance of the Rams with a 30-23 victory on Sunday. Christian McCaffrey had another 100-yard game and TD. It was his 11th consecutive game with at least one score. Only Jerry Rice (12 games in 1987) has a longer streak in franchise history. Brock Purdy passed for 206 yards and ran for an early touchdown. He became the seventh quarterback of the Super Bowl era to win his first seven career regular season starts, although Purdy did miss on a few open deep throws. Coach Kyle Shanahan announced that wideout Brandon Aiyuk (three catches, 43 yards) suffered a shoulder injury that limited his playing time, so that’s worth monitoring as he had a huge Week 1 game in Pittsburgh. Cornerback Ambry Thomas missed time throughout Sunday’s game with a knee injury.
