Cam Newton, the Panthers’ prodigal son, played a key role in Carolina’s 34-10 upset win over Arizona last weekend after rejoining the team earlier in the week. Led by Newton’s former coach in Carolina, Ron Rivera, the Washington Football Team arrives in Carolina looking to tally consecutive victories for the first time this season after posting a stunning 29-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

The Panthers are 3.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with a total of 43.0.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

With the support of 77 per cent of sports bettors, the Panthers have made steady gains since opening as 2.5-point favourites, and now sit as 3.5-point chalk. Sports bettors have also heavily backed the OVER in totals betting by a wide 84-16 margin. While that briefly boosted the total to 43.5, it has since slipped back to its opening position at 43.0.

Sunday afternoon’s matchup at Bank of America Stadium marks the fourth meeting between these NFC rivals in as many seasons. The Panthers eked out a narrow 20-13 victory in Washington last season, ending a two-game straight slide against Washington, and have now claimed outright victories in seven of 10 dates with the Football Team since 2001. The UNDER has consistently paid out, going 8-3-1 over the past 12 clashes between these teams. However, it is the OVER that has prevailed in their past three dates in Carolina, with the total reaching 50 in each of those contests.

Washington Football Team

The Washington Football team’s attention to defence paid dividends in last week’s win. In addition to limiting Tom Brady to just 220 passing yards and 6.5 yards per attempt, Washington held the Bucs to 53 rushing yards. Washington has now allowed just one scoring run in three outings, which bodes well considering the ground threat presented by both Newton and Carolina rusher Christian McCaffery. However, the Football Team struggled badly to generate offence in their past two road outings, tallying 20 total points. And in addition to owning a woeful ground game that has only scored twice in six road contests since last December, it may be too much to expect a prolific performance from quarterback Taylor Heinecke against Carolina’s top-ranked pass defence.

Carolina Panthers

If Newton’s unexpected homecoming does not motivate the Panthers and their fans, little else will. Newton saw limited action in last weekend’s win over Arizona, but enough to find to find the end zone passing and rushing. The former NFL MVP remains beloved in Carolina despite ending his first stint with the team on a disappointing note. Newton led Carolina to defeat in each of his final eight home starts, while failing to find the end zone in his final four. He and McCaffrey represent one of the biggest rushing challenges that Washington has faced this season. However, it will be Newton’s ability to resurrect a moribund Panthers passing game against Washington’s 30th-ranked pass defence that could prove to be the difference.
