NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Falcons won’t say publicly that they “don’t care” about the pre-season, but last year went 0-4 in the pre-season (the offence scored 14 or less points in three out of the four games), followed by a respectable 10-6 regular season. The Jets on the other hand went 2-2 during the exhibition round (three out of the four games went under the total), followed by a 5-11 regular season. Of note, the Jets are 8-1 ATS in their last nine home games, while the Falcons are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games. These two teams last met on October 29, 2017, as the Falcons upended the Jets 25-20.

Atlanta Falcons

According to the Atlanta-Journal-Constitution the Falcons will dress the regular starting offence for at least the first quarter of the game. On the depth chart Matt Ryan, Mohamed Sanu, Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman, and first round pick Calvin Ridley will play in this game. Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones will not see action against the Jets. On the defensive side of things, don’t expect the starters to last more than the first set of downs in the first quarter of the game. They are likely to play less than the starting offence.

2018 second round pick Isaiah Oliver (cornerback) is someone that will play at least a half of the game. The Colorado university product is in a fight for a starting job with the club, and likely to start the season as a back-up.

New York Jets

Jets fans will get their first chance to see the future of the team, as quarterback Sam Darnold is expected to play in this game. Darnold and free agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (formerly of the Vikings) have split most of the first team reps this week as Josh McCown has drawn a light load at practice. There has also been a lot of media speculation that Darnold is scheduled to be the team’s opening game starter. Don’t buy the hype as McCown will be under center in week one, with Darnold holding a clipboard on the sidelines.

The biggest question is, what will happen to Bridgewater? If another NFL team comes knocking for a quarterback, the Jets might be able to trade Bridgewater for a good asset, moving Darnold up the quarterback depth chart. Tight End Chris Herndon has impressed the Jets brass so far in camp. So much that there is some talk that he will be a future “core” piece to this lineup. Free agent running back Thomas Rawls, who spent the last number of years in Seattle has been limited in practice this week, he will not play this Friday night.
