There is drama all around the defending Super Bowl champions. After a deflating and somewhat embarrassing 34-17 defeat to the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles stay on the road and travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Philadelphia is still 4-2 overall and atop the NFC East by a game, but the team has lost two straight for the first time since it fell apart at the end of the 2023 season.
The 3-2 Vikings are coming off their bye week, but that hasn’t brought clarity to the quarterback position, as starter JJ McCarthy still appears unready to return to the starting lineup.
The Eagles are 2-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with the total set at 43.5.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
This is only the third time these teams have played in Minnesota since 2013, so take any trends between the two squads with a grain of salt.
The Eagles are 2-1 against the spread away from home this season, having beaten both the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on their home turf.
The Vikings are 1-1 against the spread at U.S. Bank Stadium and have won six of seven at home dating back to last season. The Vikings have played to the Over four times this year.
Philadelphia Eagles
Life in Philly as a sports star is great when your team is winning and you’re playing well. But it’s always a week-to-week relationship. The team is still 4-2 and in first place. They’re the defending champs. They’ve already beaten the Chiefs and the 5-1 Buccaneers on the road.
However, these last two losses, the fact that the team has been outgained in all six games, the private meeting between Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and A.J. Brown. It all has the same vibes as the team’s 2023 collapse.
Philly needs Jalen Carter back, but that might not happen as his heel injury is persisting. The Eagles need Barkley to get more than 12 carries for 58 yards. And they need Brown’s stat line to consistently look the same as or even better than last week: six catches for 80 yards.
Minnesota Vikings
This feels like a pivotal week for the Vikings. It just doesn’t sound like McCarthy is going to be ready, but will the team be hurt by the prospect of him playing?
Carson Wentz is 2-1 in relief. His poorest performance came overseas in a three-point loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s completed 69 per cent of his passes and thrown five touchdowns. But his wins have come against the Cleveland Browns and the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals. And he has a sore shoulder, although he is expected to play if McCarthy can’t go.
This is a critical three-week stretch for the team. The Eagles, followed by road games at the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions. The Vikings need to get this stretch right, as the NFC North is going to be unforgiving all season.
NFL Prediction: Who Will Win Eagles vs. Vikings?
At first glance, this is not the defence the Eagles want to face while going through their current struggles. Minnesota is sixth in the league in total yards allowed and fifth in points, and their pass defence has been suffocating.
But the team is also giving up 132.2 yards on the ground, so this could be a prime opportunity for Barkley to have his first game of the season.
It may not be pretty at times, but the Eagles find a way to get the win going away in an ugly game, 23-20.
