Eagles vs. Steelers Point Spread: NFL Week 5 Odds, Prediction

The 1-2-1 Philadelphia Eagles are in first place in the NFC East. Although they didn’t get their first win of the season until last week, they are now a first-place team coming into their Week 5 matchup with the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. The Eagles are battered and bruised, and are lucky to even have a win, and now they’re on the road facing their Pennsylvania rivals. Can they pull out a win?

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The over is 5-1 in the Eagles past six road games but the under is 4-0 in their last four games when coming in as the underdog. The under is also 8-2 in their past ten games when coming off of an ATS victory. Speaking of, Philadelphia is 6-2 ATS in their past eight games when coming in as the road underdog and 6-2 in their last eight games in Week 5.

Meanwhile, the under is 4-1 in the Steelers last five games when coming in as the favorite in the matchup and 5-1 in their last six games when playing at home against a team with a losing road record. To make the under even more enticing, it is 4-0 in the last four matchups between these two teams. Pittsburgh is 5-1 ATS in their last six games in Week 5 and 7-2 ATS in their last nine home games against teams with a losing road record.

Philadelphia Eagles

While they are coming off of a big win against the San Francisco 49ers, there is still so much to clean up for this Eagles team. Quarterback Carson Wentz only passed for 193 yards to go with one touchdown and one interception. His offensive line is continuously getting beat on what seems like every other play and now they’re up against the team that led the NFL in sacks last season. Wentz need to be able to stay calm and collected under pressure and deliver good passes downfield. The question is who will he be throwing to as DeSean Jackson missed last week’s game and Jalen Reagor and Alshon Jeffery are out.

As for their run game, they need to get Miles Sanders involved much more than they have so far this season. Sanders carried the ball 13 times but only managed 46 yards. They need to get him going to take the weight off of Wentz’s shoulders. Their defense had some good moments in their last win as well, but also allowed tight end George Kittle to total 180 receiving yards which is unacceptable. The 49ers were with backup Nick Mullens, so facing a much more talented Steelers offense will increase the challenge.

Pittsburgh Steelers

We weren’t able to see the Steelers play this past week as their opponent had multiple positive COVID-19 tests. The league ultimately decided to postpone the matchup until later in the season, so the Steelers took this past week as an early bye week. Looking back at their first three games of the season, they have clearly rallied around veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger since his return. Roethlisberger has gotten a bunch of different receivers involved so far, especially JuJu Smith-Schuster, who is already has three touchdowns this season. They also have been able to get more consistency from the running back position, mostly due to James Connor being healthy through the first few games. The running game has churned out 419 yards through three contests while averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

As for the defense, they been able to pick up where they left off last season as well, as this unit is second in the league in yards allowed, fourth in points and second in sacks (in one less game than the competition). They should be foaming at the mouth with the Eagles offensive line in tatters. If they can pressure Wentz, they’ll have an easy time of things on Sunday.
