NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Were the NFC playoffs to start today, Philadelphia (8-2) would be the NFC East champion and the conference’s No. 2 overall seed behind NFC North-leading Detroit (9-1). The Eagles should win the division (-600 favourites) as they already hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over second-place Washington, although the teams play again on Dec. 22 in D.C. But Philadelphia should be favored in every game the rest of the regular season except next week in Baltimore. Thus, catching Detroit for the NFC’s top seed is possible. The Eagles and Lions don’t  play in the 2024 regular season.

Los Angeles (5-5) would be the first team outside the NFC’s three wild-card spots currently with that No. 7 currently held by Washington (7-4). It might be much easier, then, to win the NFC West with the Rams (+550 to do so) sitting a game behind first-place Arizona (-130). The Cardinals hold the early head-to-head tiebreaker, and the teams play again in L.A. in Week 17.

Let’s put it this way: If the Rams can win here, I think they will be a playoff team. If they don’t, they won’t be. These franchises have met 44 times overall (three in the playoffs) with the Eagles leading 23-20-1. In October 2023 in Los Angeles, the Eagles won 23-14 as Jalen Hurts threw for 303 yards and a score and rushed for 72 yards and a TD. Matthew Stafford had two TD throws in a losing effort. The Eagles are 7-1 ATS in the past eight meetings.

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia improved to 6-0 since its bye week with a huge 26-18 home win over Washington on Thursday in Week 11 to take over first in the NFC East. Saquon Barkley continued his stellar season with 146 yards rushing and two scores, while QB Jalen Hurts added his 11 rush TD of the season. Barkley’s four games with a least 140 yards rushing have tied a team record. Hurts now has nine rush TDs in the past five games, the most by a QB in a five-game span since 1970. Pro Bowl wideout AJ Brown was rather quiet with five catches for 65 yards, but Philly improved to 7-0 with him in the lineup this year compared to 1-2 without. Really, the defence has been the story during the winning streak as Philadelphia has become the second team in the last 30 years to outgain its opponents by at least 100 total yards in six straight games within a season. The Eagles have the NFL’s No. 2 scoring and No. 1 total defence during the run. They are only the sixth team in the last 30 years to start at least 8-2 through 10 games in three straight seasons. Philly is 8-0 SU in its past eight November games.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were in a tricky spot Sunday on a short week and playing across the country in the Boston area with one of those 10 a.m. Pacific time kickoffs, but they avoided the trap and beat New England 28-22 to get back to .500 for the second time this season. Matthew Stafford had four TD passes for the second time in the past four games after having at least four in just two of his previous 42 games. It was his 17th career four-TD pass game, tied for seventh-most in league history. Stafford had the third-highest passer rating of his career (142.7). Star wideouts Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua had at least one receiving TD in the same game for only the second time ever and both had at least 100 yards receiving for the first time. The Rams offence didn’t have a single negative play against a pretty good Patriots defence. Los Angeles is 7-2 SU in its past nine at home.
