Losing streaks will be on the line when the Detroit Lions play host to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon. The Lions return to action as the NFL’s lone winless team after suffering a 28-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last weekend. The Eagles travel to the Motor City riding a two-game losing streak after dropping a 33-22 decision in Las Vegas last weekend that dumped their overall straight up record to a meagre 2-5.

The Eagles opened as 3.5-point road favourites on the NFL Week 8 odds. But with the woeful Lions attracting a sizeable 64 per cent of bets, Philadelphia now sits as a diminished 3-point favourite. With neither of these teams running up the score in recent contests, the total has steadily declined to 47.5 since opening at 48.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Sunday’s clash marks the first meeting between these two teams since Week 3 of the 2019 season. While wins have been rare for Detroit in recent seasons, the Lions have managed to eke out victories in each of their past three dates with the Eagles, including outright victories as betting underdogs in each of their past two clashes. Sports bettors taking the OVER have enjoyed steady success when these two teams meet. The OVER has prevailed in totals betting in each of their seven past matchups, with the total topping 50 on five occasions during that stretch.

Philadelphia Eagles

It has been a trial by fire for Jalen Hurts in his first season as Philadelphia’s starting quarterback. The 23-year-old has been steady, connecting on multiple scoring passes on four occasions, and twice running for a pair of scores. Hurts has also had to contend with a porous offensive line that has allowed him to be sacked 14 times. However, he has failed to avoid legitimate criticisms relating to inconsistency, accuracy issues, and the fact that most of his touchdowns have come when the game is already out of hand. The Eagles have also struggled without the ball. They allowed 33 or more points in three of their past five outings, and have particularly struggled against the rush. They’ve given up multiple scoring runs on three occasions this season, and over 100 rushing yards in each of their past 10 contests.

Detroit Lions

The Eagles’ struggles are great news for the Lions, who hit the gridiron at Ford Field looking to put the brakes on an epic 11-game straight up losing streak. The Lions enjoyed a strong start last weekend against their former quarterback Matthew Stafford, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead over the Rams. However, their inability to finish eventually caught up with them, with Detroit generating just nine total points in five trips into the Los Angeles red zone. That sums up what has been a brutal campaign for the Lions, who have failed to top 19 points in their past six outings. However, the Lions have also been victims of hard luck, with two of their past five losses resulting from walk-off field goals. If the Lions are to find the win column this season, Sunday’s date with the Eagles likely represents their best opportunity.
