Eagles vs. Jets Point Spread: NFL Pre-Season Week 3 Odds, Prediction

The Philadelphia Eagles travelled to New York early this week for joint practices with the Jets leading up to Friday night’s preseason finale.  The 0-2 Eagles are hoping it goes much better than last week when they were blown-out 35-0 against the Patriots following joint practices with New England.  The 2-0 Jets have looked like the better team in the preseason and are coming off a 23-14 win over the Packers following their joint practices with Green Bay last week.

New York is a 3-point favourite to win on the NFL preseason odds, with a total of 33.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Eagles and Jets have ended their preseasons against each other every year for over a decade.  They’ve alternated wins evenly back-and-forth for the last 10 preseasons, with the Jets winning the last exhibition match in 2019 (2020 preseason was cancelled because of COVID).  These teams haven’t met in the regular season since Week 5 in 2019.  Philadelphia won 31-6 at home, with quarterback Carson Wentz (now with the Colts) throwing for 189 yards and a touchdown.  Luke Falk (who signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in February) led the Jets with 120 passing yards and two interceptions.

It’s a battle of two rookie head coaches in this one.  At 0-2, Philadelphia’s Nick Sirianni is still looking for his first career preseason win.  It’s been the opposite case for New York’s Robert Saleh, who is 2-0 in the preseason.

Philadelphia Eagles

A last minute wrench was thrown into Philadelphia’s plans just before their blowout loss last week.  Quarterback Jalen Hurts was expected to start, but was pulled just before game-time with a stomach illness.  Joe Flacco (10-for-17, 83 yards, INT) and Nick Mullens (5-for-10, 27 yards, INT) both struggled in Hurts’ absence.  Rookie receiver DeVonta Smith was one of the few bright spots.  In his first NFL action, the 2020 Heisman winner only had two receptions for 19 yards, but his route running was solid and he looked more comfortable as the game went on.  Smith should get more targets against the Jets.

Cornerback Zech McPhearson is another rookie that should see lots of playing time on Friday.  Last week he finished with nine total tackles, including five solo tackles, and held the Patriots’ receivers to minimal gains.  Linebacker Alex Singleton should also factor into the game against New York.  In limited playing time last week, Singleton had five total tackles, including one tackle for a loss.

New York Jets

Rookie quarterback Zach Wilson impressed in the win over Green Bay last week and with a two-week break before the start of the regular season, I would expect him to get a good amount of snaps on Friday.  Wilson went 9-for-11 against the Packers for 128 yards and two touchdowns.  With Lamarcus Joyner and Ashytn Davis dealing with injuries, safety J.T. Hassell will get a lot of minutes against Philadelphia.  Last week, Joyner had a strong game, finishing with five tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

One concern that arose last week, was the Eagles defence.  Philadelphia allowed Green Bay to convert on eight of 14 third-down plays, including six third-down conversions in a single drive.  On the injury front, defensive end Carl Lawson is out for the season after rupturing his achilles last week.  There’s some good news though, as defensive tackle Quinnen Williams returned to practice after off-season foot surgery.
