The Eagles are coming into this season with a brand-new head coach, firing the Super Bowl-winning Doug Pederson in the offseason. The Falcons are coming into this year with some new looks as well. Julio Jones will no longer be on the roster as he was traded to the Tennessee Titans and they also have a new head coach. Each team is excited to see how their new look rosters will perform and for good reason. Which team looks to have the upper hand heading into this matchup?

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Eagles failed to cover the spread in 10 of their 16 matchups last season but hope to flip the script on that trend here. Philadelphia has also gone just 2-7 overall in games that they have entered as the underdog.

On the other hand, the Falcons were just 1-4 overall last season when they were the favorite heading into the contest. Atlanta was also just 7-9-0 ATS throughout the entire 2020 year.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles are going to ride with Jalen Hurts as their starting quarterback this season and they are hoping that he can continue his ascent. He will be partnered with his brand-new head coach, Nick Sirianni, who is a complete mystery when it comes to play-calling. Philadelphia will also be showcasing their first-round draft pick, DeVonta Smith. Hurts and Smith could prove to be a lethal combination, and given that they’re facing a shaky Falcons defense, they should be able to move the ball. The challenge is that their offensive line is going to have to improve from last season. Hurts wasn’t terrific under pressure last season and the fact that he only had 2.3 seconds to throw the ball on average shows that he couldn’t get through all of his reads.

The Eagles have a strong chance of winning this game if they could give their young quarterback time to look through his progressions and get comfortable early on.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons had an interesting offseason, to say the least. Being without Julio Jones for the first time in years may make life hard for this usually-competent offense. Calvin Ridley is now going to be facing the bulk of the defensive attention in the passing game but newly-drafted tight end Kyle Pitts could end up being a young star that helps. He didn’t play in the first two preseason games but has all the intangibles to become a fantastic receiver for Matt Ryan and company.

The Eagles defense allowed 27 passing touchdowns throughout the 2020 season, which means Pitts and Ridley should be able to have their way all night. The big question for Atlanta will be their defense. It’s unclear if they’ve plugged the major holes they had last season when they gave up 25.9 points per game.
