Philadelphia’s operating on a shorter week after improving to 2-0 with a convincing 24-7 against Minnesota on Monday night. Washington’s fallen to 1-1 after going out on the road and losing 36-27 to Detroit.

The major story in this clash is it being Carson Wentz’s first game against the Eagles. Wentz was originally drafted by Philadelphia with the second-overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft but was traded away and replaced by current Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Kickoff at FedEx Field starts at 1 p.m. EDT and it’s the Eagles a large 6.5-point favourite on the road with the total pegged at 47.5 on the NFL odds.

It was Philadelphia clawing out two victories versus divisional rival Washington last season. Washington scored a combined 33 points in the two losses, part of why they acquired Wentz this season to help spark an offence that ranked near the bottom of the league in 2021–22.

So far each team is 1-1 against the spread but Washington 2-0 to the over. The Eagles are 1-1 when it comes to the over-under, but allowed 35 points in their lone road game and then just seven last week at home.

Head-to-head, the Eagles have taken eight of their last 10 meetings with Washington, with the over hitting in four of their last six meetings as well.

Philadelphia Eagles

The early consensus is Jalen Hurts and the 2022 Philadelphia Eagles are for real. Hurts has accumulated 723 yards of offence himself. Prized off-season acquisition A.J. Brown is leading the way at receive with 15 receptions for 224 yards, and Hurts’ 147 rushing yards isn’t even the team’s best — running back Miles Sanders holds that honour with 176 yards on a 5.9 average.

Monday’s player of the game had to be cornerback Darius Slay, who had a game-high five pass deflections and a pair of interceptions. Slay and the defensive backs held Minnesota to 202 passing yards while also racking up three interceptions and three sacks.

Washington Commanders

At some point defence has to become a major concern for the Commanders. Star defensive end Chase Young remains out with his knee injury, but allowing another 425 yards and 36 points in Week 2, after a disappointing 2021–22 season for the group, is no sign of improvement.

Washington found themselves in a 22-0 halftime deficit last Sunday at the Lions, but did manage to claw their way back thanks to a 346-yard, three-touchdown outing from Wentz. Curtis Samuel once again led Commanders receivers with seven grabs for 78 yards and a score, and 2022 first-round pick Jahan Dotson scored his second touchdown in as many games.
