After coming into the season as one of the favourites to come out of the NFC, the Minnesota Vikings might need to win out just to make the playoffs. That quest begins in earnest this Sunday afternoon against a visiting Miami Dolphins team that stayed alive in the AFC wild-card race in dramatic fashion last week, pulling out a 34-33 win over the New England Patriots on a 69-yard touchdown scamper as time expired.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Vikings come in as a one-touchdown favourite, just the ninth time since 2010 that they’ve given up seven or more points at home. And history has not been in their favour, as they’ve gone a dismal 2-4-2 against the spread (ATS) the previous eight times. Fortunately for Minnesota, the Dolphins have been an even worse cover option as a road underdog of seven or more points, having gone just 3-14 ATS in their past 17 games in that situation dating back to 2012.

Sunday’s total is a modest 44.5 – and given Minnesota’s prevailing trends, the under play could be the more popular choice. The Vikings have gone below the number in five of their previous six games overall, and are an identical 5-1 to the under in their past six at U.S. Bank Stadium. Each of those unders finished at least four points below the total, while the over was converted by a half-point. Miami, meanwhile, is 6-1 to the under in its last seven road games.

Miami Dolphins

Ryan Tannehill’s return couldn’t have come at a better time for the Dolphins, who enter Week 15 with just a 20 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to FiveThirtyEight. Tannehill has been solid over the past two games, throwing for 402 yards with six TDs and one interception despite dealing with a nagging ankle injury. But repeating the feat away from Miami could be a challenge, with Tannehill having thrown for five TDs and three INTs on the road this season.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings have a 57 percent chance to reach the post-season, according to FiveThirtyEight, but won’t want to leave anything to chance as they sit right on the .500 mark with three games left. And quarterback Kirk Cousins will need to be extra-careful, with the Dolphins ranked second in the NFL with 19 interceptions. Miami can be exploited on the ground – they’re allowing 4.8 yards per carry – but Minnesota ranks just 23rd in yards per attempt (4.1).
