The Miami Dolphins will be missing star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa when they visit the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon in NFL Week 3 action at Lumen Field. The Dolphins placed Tagovailoa on the IR after he suffered yet another concussion in their first defeat of the season, a crushing 31-10 loss to Buffalo last week on Thursday Night. That opens the door for Skylar Thompson to make his first NFL start since Week 17 of the 2022 NFL season. The Seahawks return home perched atop the NFC West standings after staying undefeated with a narrow 23-20 win in New England and will be aiming to win three in a row to start their schedule for the first time since 2020.

The Seahawks sit as 4.5-point home favourites on the NFL Week 3 odds. The Dolphins trail as +180 moneyline underdogs, and the total is pegged at just 41.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Dolphins are visiting Seattle for the first time in eight years in the first overall meeting between these teams since 2020. With their 31-23 victory in Miami in October 2020, the Seahawks have now won two in a row against the Dolphins for the first time in franchise history.

The Seahawks have also topped Miami in consecutive dates on home turf and have limited the Dolphins to just 19.5 points per game during their current 3-2 run. These squads have produced uneven results in totals betting, with the OVER/UNDER going 3-3 over their past six tilts. However, the total has topped 41 just once in their past seven meetings in Seattle.

The home team has earned the win against the spread in each of their past three meetings. The Seahawks have also claimed outright wins in three previous matchups while favoured by at least four points, but covered just once over that stretch.

Miami Dolphins

The loss of Tagovailoa is a massive blow to a Dolphins squad that finds itself at the bottom of the uber-competitive AFC East standings after opening the season with back-to-back home games. With Tua now on the shelf indefinitely, the hopes of this squad rest with a backup quarterback who has posted middling numbers. Skylar Thompson connected on just 8 of 14 pass attempts for just 80 yards after stepping in for Tagovailoa and hopes that the 2022 seventh-round draft pick can build on that performance should be tempered.

Inactive for the entirety of the 2023 season, Thompson failed to find the end zone in two starts in 2022, ending that campaign with just one score and three picks while connecting on just 57.1 per cent of pass attempts in seven game appearances. In addition to adding value Thompson’s +170 odds to not throw a touchdown on Sunday, his presence under centre likely means it will be a busy day for running back De’Von Achane, who ran for 96 yards on 22 touches last week and is listed as a -115 bet on the NFL player props to top 70.5 rushing yards.

Seattle Seahawks

Injuries could prove to be a big factor in the Seahawks’ bid to maintain their divisional lead with a third straight win. Both Kenneth Walker III and DJ Metcalf missed practice on Wednesday with oblique and hand injuries, respectively. Tight ends Noah Fant and Pharoah Brown were also limited participants, while defenders Leonard Williams, Uchenna Nwosu, Jerome Baker, and Boye Mafe all spent the day in the clinic, leaving their status uncertain for Sunday.

If Walker is unable to go, look for rookie Zach Charbonnet to benefit. The product of UCLA ran for 38 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries last week. The rash of injuries among the Seahawks receiving corps likely means another big assignment for rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who busted out for 117 yards on 12 catches last week and sports short -145 odds of making OVER 4.5 catches on Sunday.
