A firestorm of controversy enveloped the team after Tua Tagovailoa was injured against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football. There were lots of conflicting statements made by the team in terms of its handling of Tagovailoa’s situation. Did the team follow the proper medical procedures relative to concussion protocol? Did it sufficiently evaluate Tagovailoa and make sure the protocols were strong enough to prevent a player from playing when his health was at risk? These questions are going to follow the Dolphins into Week 5 – especially as Tagovailoa is now out when the team is set to visit the New York Jets.

The Dolphins are 3-1 straight up, and the Jets are 2-2. Those straight-up records match these teams’ records against the spread. The Dolphins’ loss to the Bengals was their first spread loss. They beat the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots in the AFC East while also making a huge comeback to beat the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2. The Dolphins have one of the best collections of wins in the NFL through four weeks.

The Jets have won at the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have lost to the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens. The Jets have played all four of their games against the AFC North, and they are 2-0 on the road and 0-2 at home. What a weird team.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins lost to the defending AFC champion Bengals 27-15 on Thursday Night Football. This was the game in which Tagovailoa got knocked out with an injury just one week after he probably should have been kept out following a concerning back/head injury. Against the Bengals, Tua was 8-of-14 for 110 yards and one interception before getting hurt.

The concern here is how will this Dolphins team respond? Miami could easily have been 1-3 by now as they were badly outplayed by the Buffalo Bills yet eked out a win, and they were outplayed for three quarters against the Baltimore Ravens before storming back.

For Miami, if they want to prove that they’re a legit 3-1 and are in contention for a playoff spot, this is a must-win for them – even with Teddy Bridgewater under center.

One concern for Miami that’s flying under the radar is the defense. While everyone is focused on the offense, the defense is just one of five units in the NFL to be giving up north of 400 yards per game. They have the league’s second-worst pass defense, allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 68.1% of their passes. This unit is not very good right now.

New York Jets

The Jets are coming off an encouraging win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Zach Wilson completed just 18-of-36 passes – 50 percent – for 252 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. However, he did lead two touchdown drives in the final seven minutes of regulation to lead New York back from a 20-10 deficit. The Jets were hardly efficient on offense in this game as they ran for just 98 yards. They won in large part because they intercepted Steeler quarterbacks four times, picked off Kenny Pickett three times and Mitch Trubisky once.

The defense was able to stand tall in the first three and a half quarters to keep the Jets close. This unit has been flying under-the-radar as they rank 10th overall. With Tagovailoa out, maybe the Jets defense can keep this close for their developing offense.
