NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Intra-conference history is more of a curiosity than of profound value given the rarity of meetings. Miami does hold a 4-1 edge over the past five contests. The added 17th regular season game has resulted in this being the second tête-à-tête in three seasons. The Dolphins came to town in 2020 and spanked the Niners 43-17. It was a lost season for San Fran. In fact, QB Jimmy Garoppolo started but didn’t finish that very game due to injury.
Mike McDaniel has guided Miami to a stellar 8-3 win-loss record, putting them in pole position in the AFC East. It’s been a bit tighter against the spread at 6-5, but that figure is askew. Star QB Tua Tagovailoa missed 2 ½ games early in the season and Miami lost all of them. They’ve also covered three of their last four outings.
Mike Shanahan’s squad is also 6-5 ATS on the year, which also isn’t as strong as their win-loss showing of 7-4. The mirror imaging continues when considering that San Francisco has covered three of its last four games. They had been involved in very close wins up until two weeks ago. By the same token, their two most recent opponents haven’t offered great challenges.
Miami Dolphins
This is a big week for Miami. Yes, they are 8-3 and lead the AFC East on a tie-breaker with the Bills. They’ve earned four consecutive wins. Finally, Tua and his fellow playmakers have exploded in those games. The opponents, however, were Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, and Houston. All squads with losing records and glaring deficiencies.
One can only play the teams in front of them. Miami has feasted on opponents as they sit 3rd in total yards per game, 2nd in passing yards per game, and 6th in points scored per game. They’re a middle-of-the-pack team on the ground, but with Tua throwing and WRs Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill (questionable) catching, running the ball is a secondary option. Week 12 against the Texans resembled a stroll in the park. Miami took the game 30-15 and led 30-0 at the halfway mark. Sharp passing attack, key running plays, turnovers on defence, it was the full package.
San Francisco 49ers
The last time the 49ers looked like a beatable opponent was when they hosted the Chiefs in Week 8 when they crumbled 44-23. Since then, it’s been a lot of battering and bruising of their rivals. One gobsmacking statistic is how the defence has not allowed a single point in the past four second halves of games. Not one!
In fairness, we can muster an argument similar to the one concerning the Dolphins. Whom have they played? The Rams, Chargers, Cardinals, and Saints. All right, the Chargers are solid. That was a fantastic effort to come back and win. Defensively, the team is the cream of the crop in most major categories. Offensively, it’s been a nice balance of running and passing. The Christian McCaffrey acquisition at RB will be critical given that Elijah Mitchell is, once again, out for several weeks. Deebo Samuel may be called upon for key running plays.
